Seems to me that it should be possible to hook up a computer monitor to the STB using the HDMI output. I could connect computer speakers to the audio output jacks.
Is this a practical alternative to get a HD output? |

Yes, that works in most cases, although I've read that sometimes people have had problems getting cheap off-brand monitors to work. If you're buying a monitor just for this purpose, I would be sure there is a suitable return policy if it doesn't work.

The two main things to look for (if you're buying a monitor) are that is supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), and that it supports one of the aspect ratios used by the STB (720p, 1080i). The aspect ratio won't likely be an issue at all, but if your monitor doesn't support HDCP (as in many cheap models, like Dr.Dave mentioned), then the HDMI handshake will fail and you should receive an error on the screen indicating that 'your television doesn't support HDCP'. If you receive this message, then you won't get any UI or video on the screen. Otherwise, your setup is certainly alright

The bigger problem you might have is finding a computer monitor with speakers or a sound out.
Most will have HDMI with HDCP, but there usually nothing for the sound to come out of. |

You can separately run a cable to the RCA jacks for analog audio output if necessary.
