Default Advice For Home Automation

Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I want to do a home automation project. My son is disabled and we are trying to use technology to assist him where we can.

We've recently installed a full 4 floor elevator system from Savaria/Concord. We want to use ipads to control home lighting, audio/video with ir controls. Eventually we would like to enable HVAC controls.

I'm fairly handy and comfortable with electrics, programming and cables. I wired up a wired/wireless jandy pool/spa automation system this summer and added 240 volt salt/chlorine system.

I would like to use quality components and software that can be upgraded in the future if necessary. I am being conscious of cost although quality is important.

All advice would be appreciated.
