The free, open source HTPC media center for the technically inclined... some configuration and assembly required. MediaPortal 1.2.0 includes hundreds of bug fixes and a new skin.

I have used it in the past, and it was good (I think it was still the beta version 0.9 or something like that). Then I changed over to GB-PVR since I mainly use it for recording tv shows. Since I bought the Rogers STB PVR Sa8300, I have stopped using them. They are both good for winxp.

Yea it installed real easy and directed me to the sites for additional needed files.
I how ever don't seem to be able to watch my ota in it I think I am not clear on what it really does, it did install nicely. I will make an image of it as it is tuned up to date and take it from there. I did find the quick setup guide and in fact got the card configured and scaned and found all my OTA the one thing I am missing is where and how I just view the Tv in Media Portal |

The TV server needs to be configured for watching TV. Channel scanning is required, even for analog channels. There are a number of other things that need to be configured for some cards, such as identifying hybrid tuners to prevent conflicts and guide services (not included.) Overall, MediaPortal has become quite a nice package but its strength is also its big drawback. Free means that things like guide or streaming services and some codecs are not included. It's abundance of features require a lot of configuration, which has a learning curve. The most difficult parts are configuring the TV server and codecs.

I used media portal for quite a while until I discovered Media Browser
no real complains about media portal once it was working Media Browser was about 15 minutes from download to fully configured, media portal was many many hours to make it work properly |

hmm...last time I tried MediaPortal I found performance to be very slow...I might give this one a try to see if it's any faster.

I've had some time to use MediaPortal 1.2 now. The upside is that it seems faster than past versions. On the downside, reliability seems to have taken a hit compared to 1.1.

as Media Browser is essentially a plugin for media center that interfaces with xml files to present your data in a pretty way (you need to already have media center) media portal is basically media center, that presents your data in a pretty way I imagine you could find skins for both to make them look virtually identical |
