Default Gartner lowers 2011 sales forecast for android tablets

Worldwide sales of tablet computers are on pace to reach 63.6 million units according to a recent report from Gartner.

While the increase is still amazing, the numbers are down significantly from the almost 70 million in predicted sales in Gartner’s April report. The firm has significantly lowered its sales forecasts for Android, WebOS and QNX tablets.

Predictions for iOS are down about 2% at Gartner but Android Numbers down 28%.

What I can't get over is the number of Android and Microsoft tablet sales they are predicting.

Microsoft from nothing this year to 34 million in 2015. Android from 11 million to 116 million in 2015. Those are huge gains and seem a little hard to swallow.

The only long term prediction I agree with is WebOS.

I sure RIM would love to sell 26 million units in 2015.

Do these predictions ever take into account that eventually everyone who wanted a tablet will own one and won't need to buy another device for a few years?

Over 350 million computers will be sold this year.

Tablets won`t even be at that level by 2015 so I wouldn`t worry about maturation anytime soon.

If tablet makers can figure out how to get people to buy a new one every 6 months like they've done with cell phones, that won't be a problem.

I'm really hoping for good things for the PlayBook. Every Android tablet I've used has left me wondering "who buys this junk?".

Uh oh. And I'm waiting to receive a couple of samples from Lenovo. One Android, one Windows 7 (will try installing Windows 8 on it).
