Just got Netflix yest. and love it so far.Ok for us since we dont rent movies for a long time.Cancelling the newspaper $20 a mth and now pay $8 for Netflix, good trade. With the OTA from Detroit including THIS-MGM movies and RTN.Its nice to give Rogers,Bell and Cogeco the middle finger for a change. Finally a break of their monopoly.I like it so far.Competition is great for everyone.

We are on our second month of Flix, no looking back. I can't get my spouse to stop watching it. What a bargain!

Your right wilspin, it does get addictive. I think because you get to pick what you want to watch instead of being slave to a channels schedule.

If you havent tried Netflix, do get it.Big thumbs up back here in the motorcity.

The offering is 7.99$ canadian dollars and Taxes Included. I could not even believe the taxes were included when I saw it on my credit card. For me it's a cheaper, on-demand, Movie Network alternative.

Disclosure: I have owned for many years prior to the Canadian launch, and still own, shares of Netflix.

Although Netfilx does sound like a good deal, it definitely would not work for me. The huge issue for me is the lack of closed captioning on that service. Only a few programs in the USA are captioned, from what I have found out by doing web searches, and I assume the Canadian service is even worse.

David1953,
There is no close caption on Netflix. The option is available but only few have it.

Netflix stated in their blog in Feb 2011 they have subtitles in 30% of their library and are targeting for 80% of its library by end of 2011, with similar goals for Canada.

My wife and I love Netflix. I don't see it as replacing cable or new release movie rentals, I see it as replacing the rentals of older movies and TV series.

Love the commercial-free, on-demand aspect and the fact that I can watch the shows on my TV, laptop and iPhone. Hopefully soon on my Android tablet.

Some great movies and TV shows are on Netflix. It has been fun to explore TV shows I missed when they first came out and to see them from the beginning.

Some shows I have enjoyed on Netflix include:

TV
---
  • Heroes
  • Dollhouse
  • Firefly
  • Republic of Doyle - got to love a show shot in Newfoundland that actually is set in Newfoundland
  • Jeremiah
  • Merlin
  • Roswell
  • Dead Zone
  • Mythbusters
  • Robin Hood

Movies
-------
  • Princess Bride
  • Bewitched
  • Underworld
  • Butterfly Effect
  • Short Circuit
  • Pleasantville
  • Blade
  • Terminator 2
  • 12 Monkeys
  • Aliens
  • Dune
  • A Knight's Tale
  • A Beautiful Mind
  • Mystery Men

and many more

Also some great documentaries and a lot of anime to explore.'

We actually dumped our cable and saved $50 per month by going with Netflix instead. Not for most people but in our case, Netflix fills our TV viewing hours each week quite nicely.

And, with the new bandwidth changes from Shaw, we don't seem in any danger of going over.

Bottom line, for a family, Netflix is fantastic deal. We have a home with a ton of tech flying around.

We have 4 Xbox 360's, 6 computers, Ipad 2, Iphone, I-touch (3), Boxee, WD Live and Netflix provides my wife and I great entertainment and our 3 teenagers tons of value.

We can watch from anywhere we sit, lay down, sun tan, etc and bring something up to keep us entertained. We also travel and stay at friends and family's home's and we can use our devices from our temporary rooms or hotel rooms to watch Netflix.

And all this done on 1 account with 1 log in for $8 bucks.

Besides all the movies and shows mentioned above I'm also loving all the new and old school Samuri movies, documentaries, River Monsters, fishing shows and Foreign films. Don't know anything else that provides like kind of range and flexibility for $8/month.

I can see it getting dull after a year or two possibly but the whole market is changing with Cable companies and TV companies scrambling. They're all revamping how they do things and if Netflix can cut deals every few months, it should be able to keep a lot business, including mine.

I recently signed up for Netflix and I don't see what the big deal is. They don't seem to have any major recent movies and most of the movies I search for aren't in their library. In my opinion the selection is quite lackluster. I thought Netflix would have practically every title you can think of, at least they lead you to believe that somewhat with their ads, but it isn't true, at least not in Canada. If I was living in the US then I might keep Netflix, but right now I don't think i'll continue with it. Perhaps i'll try Shaw's new movie service.

I recently also cancelled my Netflix subscription after a couple of months,I found it left me wanting with what they had to offer.

ditto on the cancel. Anything of interest to us we had already seen, especially the movies, and their weren't many tv shows of interest.

What I didn't like was that after cancelling they sent several e-mails about "problems" authorizing my paypal account.

Geez jericho, we've been through this a thousand times in this forum. If you really thought what you wrote there, then your expectations are not realistic. Think it through, if it had "practically every title you can think of" for just $8 per month then the video stores, the PPV market, BD sales market, the premium movie channels, iTunes downloads, hotel movie rentals, etc would be pretty much completely dead! As the US service isn't much better.

That's right. They have some but very few. If they had a lot of new releases how do you think movie sales at Walmart would do? And rentals at Blockbuster, PPV, iTunes? What would the movie channels have to show? All of those are at a much higher price point.

Again, that's an approach where you're guaranteed to be disappointed. The way Netflix will appear of any value is you don't go in there we a pre-determined idea of what you want to watch/search for but instead are willing to "browse" in the genre of your interest or the new release RSS feed.

I'm quite a movie buff with several thousand ratings on imdb.com (I was a member there since it was a tiny two bit operation - way before the Amazon acquisition). My point I'm getting to is that I watch many movies on Netflix and probably 80% of them I've never heard of before.

YROC...thanks for that link! I've been looking for something like that. The nice part is that it's free and legal.
