Hmm, how much would TCP/IP overhead typically be and, why would Rogers include that in the calculation (I know, probably a naive question).

I assume "junk" packets are packets with errors and therefore need retransmitting (?).

Junk packets could be anything not useful to you. Port scans, zombie bots sniffing around, etc. All sorts of things can be sent to your IP address without your consent.

And why wouldn't Rogers measure all bits involved? It's more money to them.

Minimum header on IP is 20 bytes. Maximum amount of data (MTU) per packet is 1500 bytes. So, overhead of valid packets is at least 1.33 percent. There is also corrupt packets, management traffic and attacks etc.

In my current billing cycle, Rogers' download count has been waaaaay off, to my advantage though. I've easily actually used double what their web site meter is telling me I've used.

My last 2 billing cycles were pretty much spot on, before that it wasn't accurate at all (since they started tracking) to my advantage. This one has been the most inaccurate ever.

Lately when I go into the Rogers Internet Usage tool on the MyRogers website it very often (like now, and yesterday) says:

We are currently experiencing problems. Please try again later.
If you have any questions please e-mail us or contact our Online Customer Care Group at 1-877-343-5745.
Do others see this or is it only my account? If they can't provide me with consistent, accurate usage data then how can they bill me for overages?

Occasionally I go to my account and the usage information is not available, but most times it is. I just checked today

My internet usage tool was working only sporadically in May and June. Haven't looked yet in July.

Perhaps try logging in at non-peak times. As I mentioned earlier, there are occasions when it doesn't work for me too, but a day later it's usually just fine.

Since I go into the Rogers site to make use of the web scheduling tool a few times a week, I always get to see my usage before clicking the link...

Latest issues:

No 75% notification was received. Just a 100% notification was received.

And when the 100% notification was received, I logged into to see what the usage was, and it showed a usage of 79 GB. Which is funny because the max before extra charges start is 60 GB. Naturally, they had me at $36 in overage charges.

I complained that I did not receive the 75% notice, and the 100% notice was really 133%. Furthermore, they had me using 70 MB (yes, not that much) for the past two days when I was out of the country. All computers in the house were turned off while away. lol

According to rogers usage tracker, I have downloaded 33GB in 15 hours, considering I slept for 6 hours and my max speed is 1.2mb, something is way off.

Is that 1.2 mB (Express or above)? If so, 1.2 x 3600 x 9 gives slightly more than 33GB.

As long as numbers aren't audited by a trusted source, you will never get accurate numbers from Rogers. They have no incentive to make it accurate and it obviously benefits them if they don't give you timely reporting.

And as long as Rogers is implementing throttling by dropping packets, there are duplicate transmissions that factor into our overage charges.
