They didn't answer you about the $10.00 discount?

The new firmware for the 530 adds features I would like to have, but if they hadn't jumped the gun and announced it prematurely, none of us wouldbe complaining here because we wouldn't know about it.
We'd still being complaining about the crappy DSR530 with it's many many flaws and single recording. Not much better than a vcr.

I wrote a completely honest (might have looked like a diatribe to whomever received it) message to "Ask Jim" using the form on the self-serve site.
About two hours later I had to leave for work but my wife phoned me and asked what I had said to Shaw? When I asked why she wanted to know she told me that there was a "long" message on our voice mail from Shaw and that it sounds like "they really want to talk to me badly to find a resolution to my concerns".
We'll see on Monday if that entails lying to me or a possible bill reduction... I'm not sure there is anything they can say at this point that'll keep me but I'm trying to have an open mind before I talk to them.

Why is SD bothering with the 530?

This fiasco is a rerun of Dishnetwork's first offering - the Dishplayer 1000 disaster.

Shaw Direct will NOT be in business 18 months from today if they have not switched HD to MPEG4 (with or without DVB-S2). They will lose 300k to 400k customers within 18 months if they don't start adding more - 55 HD channels doesn't cut it. As proof, Bell outsold SD 40:1 in the last 3 months.

So what if the 530 finally gets upgraded to most people's satisfaction ... then it becomes a SD PVR within months.

I suspect that Shaw is just smoke screening everyone here ... just to keep you hanging on til the 630 is released.

From what i understand the new firmware is centered around the 600 series but will work in the 530. We will see.

Default DirectTV/DishNetwork

So, if Bell has the advantage of using DishNetwork technology, why doesn't StarChoice make a deal with DirectTV to use their technology(or at least try - maybe they did I don't know). The battle would then be a fair one... It would boil down to price/packaging and customer service... like it does here in the US between DishNetwork and DirectTV.... Sounds too simple...

What makes you thinks it's 6XX centric?

I suppose they could have started over with the 6xx and then port down to 5xx.
If that is the case, then I think the chances of seeing 5xx code are even worse than they now appear.

The code may be portable if they use the same family of processors and graphics chips.
Problems occur because of minor timing differences in each generation of chiipsets due to the way the BSP and middleware code is written.

They need to stay DCII for two reasons.

1. They would need to replace every set-top box in the field.

2. There is no DirecTV equivalent of the Motorola/GI head-end equipment cable companies use to receive the services distributed by Shaw. That would have to be developed.

IMO, the most they could do is work with DirecTV to make a DirecTV format/DCII combo hardware build, factory programmed for DCII or DirecTV service.

Please don't jump on me for this, but I discussed the same thing with them, and I believe the analogy is better served in terms of "moving from a DOs-based operating system, to Vista"... meaning it's a whole (argh) paradigm shift for the OS.

Which was exactly what Voom was doing before their demise - except that they had to be built by Motorola (Scientific Atlanta is the only DCII licencee)

What about PACE?
All you need to substitute is the tuners, 8PSK for QAM.

If they have to make home DTH satellite receiver for only one client with the neighborhood of 1 mil subs, the hardware will be no far ahead than now.

Default Update Prediction

Like most, I have been waiting for the long promised upgrade to the 530. Because my 530 has been one of the good ones I am still quite happy with it and am not at the point of switching to Bell but as others have pointed out SD has promised this update for so long now it certainly makes them look bad as a company when they cannot deliver. So with that in mind here is my prediction of how the upgrade for the 530 might eventually happen. First lets remember that back when the 530 first came out there were updates every few months. Some made the unit better and some made it worse. Somewhere around the BC code the machines either worked OK, or were killed. CC addressed the killing aspects of the BC code. CC came out July 18, 2006. After CC we got E4 the following summer. January 2008 we got F0, September 2008 F2 and finally F8. But really, no functional improvements have occured since E4. Reviewing old threads the promised dual recording, 2 week guide update has been promised for more then 3 years in some form or another. I believe SD has been burned by releasing code too early so they at some point decided to make this grand update as near perfect as possible, only to discover they can't do it. So SD is in a jam. One possible solution may be for SD to not offer any update to the 530 receivers until the 600 receivers are ready. This way if the 530 upgrade proves to be buggy or worse yet kills some receivers SD can offer to move the customer up to the 600 series for a cost yet to be determined. I really believe SD is afraid to release any new code to the 530 unless they have the new 600 series ready to parachute any unhappy 530 users into as a last resort. But of course this all hinges on the 600 series working perfectly as well. Again, just my idle speculation.

It's still not here, and it will never be in working form. The 600 series is a new ball game and will hopefully have dual recording and a 2 week guide. The 530 has been written off, my inquiries to SD with links to this forum have had zero response. To me that speaks volumes.
