Anyone know where I can get Cars and Monster's Inc. for less that $20 each in Canada?

Tired of getting ripped off by the major players here.I could get both for $35 us from that american book seller.I would prefer to support a canadian company but they don't need to be eating caviar at my expense.

^ You're preaching to the (out of tune) choir bud. Keep your eye on this place for the (rare enough) Disney/Pixar/Miramax/BVHE/ABC/other-subsidiaries deal.

Monsters Inc. is surprisingly (to me) superior to the (already quite good) DVD. Worth the ~US$20 IMO. Just do it the American way...

Edit: just a small tip, but keep an eye on the price at amazon.com of the Cars Gift Set (BD/DVD/cars); it often has sold for less than the BD only, like US$13 when I got it a few months ago. I'm pretty sure I saw the Cars BD (only) at WM for well under $20 last week...that helps a lot huh?

Take a look at amazon.co.uk, many region free Chinese Blu-ray movies are only 6 -10 pounds. The full length (5 hours) Red Cliff Special Edition which includes Parts 1 and 2 is only 9 pounds.

Shipping is very reasonable too when compared with amazon.com. You don't have to prepay taxes like amazon.com, it is up to Revenue Canada's discretion.

Went to one BB and it was sold out so did a price match at FS and got it even cheaper.

^ It depends on how much you order. By that I mean, for instance, my last *small* order (~$50) a few weeks ago slipped through with ZERO charges. I have learned to make small orders if possible. I mean physically small, not $-small.

It seems to sometimes matter to whoever decides whether to ding you or not. amazon.co.uk packs small.

Normally, you could expect to pay: PST + GST (or HST) + duty (~6%) + $5. Your credit card will be charged exchange rate at the time of billing by amazon, plus 2.5%+ (i.e. at least 2.5% fee for the currency exchange).

Don't forget that the prices we pay are significantly lower than posted at amazon.co.uk, since we don't pay VAT; adjusted prices show when you start the checkout procedure. Also, strangely, shipping charges are noticeably cheaper from the UK than from the U.S. (like ~CDN$1.75 per item vs US$3).

Yeah, it gets complicated... But as you said, sometimes prices are so much lower than even in the U.S., not to mention they have lots of stuff you just can't order from a regular retailer in North America. I don't bother with borderline "cheaper" items, I go for the hugely cheaper stuff knowing that in the worst case if I get dinged for all fees I'll still be lots better off.

Check that any BD you want is playable here if you don't have area-free. Most are. But *sometimes* the extras aren't...check first if you care. Further, sometimes there is a DVD included with some BDs and that will certainly be Region 2.

I use Columbia House. Yes, I know of the horror stories. I have my very own from their days of music CD's. That being said, personally, they just cannot be beat.

I believe I had to buy 04 at regular price to fulfill my membership. Since it was a free shipping period just before Christmas 2008, my first order took care of that. With that being said, I find all their regular price blu rays are 29.99. Things FS and BB are selling for 32-35 are just 29.99 there. Shipping is usually $1.99 per disc in box. Had some three disc movies get charged for each disc, and others that slip through as just one disc.

They also have their online, no membership store called chcanada. Some great blu ray prices there as well. Like 14.99 Blu ray specials periodically, which are sometimes brand new releases.

Once I fulfilled my membership, the standard offer for the last year has been, buy one at regular price, get unlimited at 50% off. Now comes the real good part..... Pre-Orders are allowed. For the last two years, I have been paying full price for one movie, (still cheaper than BB & FS) and pre-ordering like 15 others that are not released for up to 3 months. The 50% off discs cost me on average $18.61 with taxes and shipping!!!

My example, an order I placed in early December for 6 blu rays cost me $116.58. (I had a $10 discount due to the new website) FS or BB would have been over $180.00 @$30.00 a movie. The movies I ordered were Casino, Ghostbusters, Monsters vs. Aliens, Public Enemies, Top Gun, and Transformers 2.

Sounds too good to be true! What is the downfall? A few things. Shipping times can be a little nuts. A few weeks after release. Sometimes, they run out of stock, even though it is pre-ordered....however, it is usually filled rather quickly. The invoicing can be hard to determine what you really owe as well if you have multiple orders in. They ship as they receive the product. Over the Christmas period, they were upgrading their systems, so calling in and getting account balances etc was next to impossible. The automated system and operators could not pull the information. Never had a lost disc, or weird things happen to my account. Payments always accounted for.

Sometimes, if I order stuff they have in stock, they ship it all in one box, Canada Post expedited parcel. Which is nice. I have had no real issues other than wait times for movies. However, my Blu Ray collection is over 100 movies, and I think 95% of them came from Columbia House. I sit back and think how much I have saved.

They do NOT carry Disney movies, or any of the affiliates. The last part of that statement I am not 100% sure of, but Disney movies I know they don't. Disney has it's own crummy mail order group.

Feel free to PM if you have any questions. While I hear horror stories all the time, they are still in business, which means they must be doing something right, or have a large happy customer base. For me, the savings outweigh any annoyances I have had.

Best times to buy from Columbia House are when they're offering additional incentives on top of the the usual buy one, get the rest for half price pricing scheme i.e. free shipping, or first title is also half price, etc... An average per-title price less than $19 isn't bad, but doesn't always equate to the absolute lowest deal in town.

In my case, I like to think of Columbia House as my last resort source for buying discounted BD titles; if I can't find something elsewhere (either online, or through a B&M store), then I'll add it to my CH to-buy list. Once the list reaches a minimum of 6-7 titles, I'll put in an order.

I picked up Poltergeist at Zellers for $9.99 on Sat. it scanned $31 but the tag said $9.99 it might have been left over from boxing week

You can pick up John Carpenter's classic The Thing for 9.99 at BB video store. I had a $5.00 coupon which made it a real bargain.
