Default GTHL Hockey, the flu and a Dad's nerves

My son plays in the GTHL as do many of his friends so the sad events of the last few weeks have certainly been top of mind.

Last week several teams in my sons division were missing 2 to 5 kids for games with what appears to have been the flu.

Yesterday, nine boys out of fifteen on my sons hockey team (including my son) missed practice and are home from school today. My son has headache, fever, dry cough which suggests he has the flu, and possibly H1N1.

Needless to say, it's pretty scary. Objectivity says that the odds of any problems are low but probability gets thrown out the window when your son is in bed sick.

To date, my son seems okay. The fever is not real high, he has a bad headache but his whole body doesn't ache and he has a good appetite so I am confident that he will be fine in a couple of days.

Now I have to worry about the rest of the family!

Anyone else suffering from the flu these days?

(please no posts about media hype of H1N1, I'm just interested in hearing from folks who have had run-ins with the flu lately)

My wife possibly had it, the doctors were convinced she did, but won't know for sure until the test results come in (which takes 30 some days). The rest of us had to be put on Tamiflu as a precaution. If you think your son has it, you should take him to the doctor.

As you can imagine, we've been following it pretty closely. He has no respiratory problems and he has probably had it for 48 hours so anti-virals aren't likely to help. Most of the kids around us have recovered without getting really sick or having to make hospital visits. Fortunately, I think, and am hopeful, that he is one of the ones who gets off with a mild case.

Make sure all who can, are taking a multivitamin with at least 400 IU of Vitamin D.

My wife is pregnant, a Nurse and catches the flu very easily. Not the best combination. I would certainly share in your concern Hugh if I had kids. Wonder how many parents have actually kept their children out of a team sport this fall due to H1N1 concerns?

Both our kids started coughing about a week ago and complained of headaches. Over the weekend they had a fever of about 39. We kept a close eye on them and the fever left after 1 or 2 day. So was it the flu? I think so but it was pretty mild.

My son has the flu. Started feeling achy and had a fever on Monday. Still feeling kinda lousy today, but he is still up and about most of the day. Dry cough, headache, fever, etc. Ironically he had his annual physical scheduled for yesterday and the doctor told him to stay home.

No point in going to see a doctor when you have flu symptoms. Rest, drink fluids, and stay HOME. Apparently you are still contagious 1 day after the fever is gone.

I found this page useful.

People infected with an influenza or cold virus become contagious 24 hours after the virus enters the body (often before symptoms appear). Adults remain infectious (can spread the virus to others) for about 6 days, and children remain infectious for up to 10 days

My son is home today for the 4th day in a row. He's never been off school for illness for more than 2 days so this is really unusual. He definitely has the flu (don't know if its H1N1 or not) but no respiratory problems so hopefully tomorrow he will be better.

That is good news. From what I have read and heard the majority of people find the congestion in their lungs the most difficult part.

Did anyone else have the flu early in the year? I had one of the worst flus of my life back in February as did my kids.
