Will the combination of the HTR-6140 Yamaha receiver and the PS3 provide me with all of the new sound formats (Dolby True HD, DTS-MA)?
Here is a description of the receiver from Future Shop: This high performance Yamaha Home Theatre Receiver offers many advanced functions including 1080p/24fps HDMI video switching, HDMI audio support, high quality Burr Brown DA Converters, YPAO sound optimization for the best possible performance as well as XM and Sirius compatibility. |

Yes, as the 6140 can accept LPCM over HDMI.
The PS3 will do the decoding send it to the 6140. Be aware, there are reports of the 6140 making the video signal 'darker'. Apparently the 6160 and up does not have this issue. The 6140 is very good value IMHO at the current price. (sorry admin!) By the way, this is the exact same unit as the RX-V463. See further down this page for the review.

Thank you for your response. I have had two sales people one at Future Shop and another at Fairview Hi-Fi in Burlington tell me that I would need a receiver with these sound formats in order for it to work with the PS3.
Yes, I did see the review of the RX-V463 but where in the Burlington area is it available. Future Shop and Best Buy don't seem to carry it. Does it have the "darker" video problem? |

Futureshop and BB don't carry it because they get the 'HTR' version.
The HTR-6140 and the RX-V463 are identical in all but name. Yamaha (and Denon) have done this for years. HTR versions go to 'big box' stores and the RX series goes to the small boutiques and hifi stores. It does (potentially) have the dark video problem as it is the exact same unit.

Just curious, but since the PS3 does the decoding, does that mean just about any receiver with an HDMI input will work? The receiver would just need to be able to output video to the tv.

Not all AVRs handle HDMI audio, but ones that do will work with the PS3. Some AVRs and HTIBs simply switch/pass HDMI video and pass the audio to the TV, not processing the audio internally.
