Default Laptop with SPDIF to AVR connection

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes

I have a laptop with a Combined optical digital audio output/headphone out (minijack) And am wondering how to get 5.1 from my laptop to my sorround receiver.

Is it possible to just use a 3.5mm to RCA conversion cable, and then connect this to the COAX connection on my receiver?

That will work. I think it has to be a mono miniplug though.

Ok a mono mini plug and then set the Laptop to output Digital instead of Analog, right?

Yes. You may have to tweak the sound control settings to get 5.1.

does the little 3.5mm hole shoot out a red light? if so, then it may be a SPDIF out, which means all you need is an optical cable (toslink to toslink) which comes with a little 3.5mm add-on. then you need a program like ac3filter to output your movies in dolby digital/dts

Don't confuse coax with optical. If it was optical the port would be square not round.
