Default PS3 Price Drop Rumours for week of July 2nd

Recently a poster in the DVD Talk Forums cited a "leaked" Circuit City sales flyer for the week of July 15th indicates the PLAYSTATION 3 will be getting a price drop.

This was posted on a Blog and now its big news everywhere on the internet.

Apparently it's a Circuit City-only back to school promotion:

The price drop is something that is not totally out of the realm of a possibility.

Take these things into consideration.

1. May be a little vague but Sony was quoted as saying "At present we have no plans," Currently PS3 is the same price. 2 weeks from now that may change. They also said Rumble functionality was last gen and wouldn't include it. Guess what? they settled their legal disputes and rumble is sure to be included soon.

2. It has already been confirmed that production costs for Blu ray players have decreased. That being said there's no reason why that margin can't trickle down to the PS3 especially since they are quickly slipping behind in sales to Nintendo and Microsoft.

3. E3 is days away. What bigger of an annoucment would there be to say there's a price cut to PS3? Especially since there's likely to be very few "big titles" that will be playable.

It's been written about in many places that Sony was losing money with every PS3 sold. The decrease in production costs may or may not bring it to break-even at the current price. If they drop the price they will likely continue losing money with every sale. As weird as it sounds, they have a $700 loss leader, but if people really were buying it to play B-R discs then there would be fewer PS3 games sold then they had expected.

I would not want to hold any Sony stock leading into the next quarter end results. The numbers could be very, very bad -- the only "positive" (to the bottom line) is that they didn't sell as many PS3s as they had budgeted (hence lower losses on sales).

Here's a blurry pic that is allegedly from Best Buy Canada, indicating a $549 price.

Reuters is now reporting that there is no price drop at all from Sony.

ahh que3jxp, see post #1 which has a link to the same article.

Sadly Sony has no credibility. WIth E3 coming up and the fact that they always deny future price cuts (see PSP denials earlier this year), it would seem no one wants to believe the denial.

They will probably keep denying it up until their E3 press conference to try to salvage what little "thunder" this announcement will still have.

posts deleted.

Please people, no more posting that Sony denies it! That was noted in the very first post!

in addition, this is not a Blu-ray vs. HD DVD or XBOX 360 vs. PS3 thread so don't be posting comparisons or fanboy comments!

This thread is about a rumour that has been denied by everyone involved (rumours that everyone seems to believe!)

Default PS3 Price Drop

If the price drops (a big IF, if it does, it will be announced during E3 next week), here is what it will drop to:

USA
From $599 to $499

CANADA
$659 to $559 (+/- $10)

no more ifs:

So now you can buy an Elite for 479.99 or a PS3 for 499.99. Not much of a price argument any longer (and a blu-ray player is built in for that $20). Yes, 60gb storage difference in the 360's favour, but I don't consider that much of a selling point.

When you factor in the PS3's Blu Ray player, it's no contest as to the superior console.

As of July 10, the PlayStation 3's North American price point is going south. The next-generation console will cost $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, the same price as the discontinued 20GB model.
