Move from 3100 to HD - What are my options?

I have been a BEV customer for 5 years. I want to switch to HD. Currently have a 3100 receiver. My contract has long since expired.

I tried to get the "free HD receiver" deal at Christmas, but it was for new customers only.

What can I do to switch to HD, with little to no cost? I don't have a problem signing a new contract. Also, I know I'll need a new receiver, but will I have to install a new dish as well?

Please advise.

May be a good idea to wait until July as new HD receivers will be coming out which may support future HD channels that current receivers may not support.

The deal that I was offered a couple of months ago as an existing customer was similar to a new customer except I only had to resign for 1 year instead of two.

A 6100 receiver for $10/mth or a 9200 receiver for $20/mth. The first 6 mths of HD programming free, then $10/mth.

This is still available on their web site.

Installation was free. "Upgrade" to a 20" dish and SW44 was included.

I wanted to go the rental route to wait and see what new receiver come out over the next year as ultimately I would prefer to own it but heard they were likely changing.

I got the same deal as dosborne about a month ago. The only thing I would suggest is to look into whether or not you will need to switch your current programming packages in order to take advantage of all the HD channels. I was on a legacy package and ended up having to switch to the current packages when I ordered HD.

If you are on legacy programming and are told by BEV that you won't need to switch your programming, confirm this over and over (and get it in writing if necessary). I was burned by this and so were several people I know.

If you're alright with switching to the newer programming then you should have nothing to worry about.

Whatever you do DON"T get a 6100! It doesn't function properly and Bell has no desire to fix it. If you have a free evening see the thread "6100 freezing" Two years of posts and counting for this problem.

The only thing offered to me when I added HD in Dec 06 was the LNB and switches to receive 82. I already had them so there wasn't any deal at all.

Option 1
Buy or rent HD receiver and get free install of additonnal hardware required and receiver + 6 months of HD programming if you rent

Option 2
Call and say you will disconnect cause they don't have HD promos for existing client. They will most probably give you free rental for 1-2 year

I also would like to buy hd pvr , but with all this talk about MPEG4 I'm not sure what to do.I do not want in a few months to be stuck with useless hd receiver.

As an existing Cutomer, ALL installation charges will apply, however you will be elligible for a refund of all charges (less tax) if you currently do not have any Nimiq 2 reception, ie; HD or International, speciallity channels.

Option 1;

6100, $10 per month Rental or $149 to purchase.
9200, $20 per month Rental. Not available for Purchase.

You say you have just a 3100, well based on this you should be looking at $75 installation cost for the 6100 and $125 for the 9200. Both will be carried out by installing a new 20" dish. The 6100 will also have 2 x SW21's installed whilst the 9200 will have an SW44 installed (this will leave you with 2 spare ports for future additional receivers).

You will be locked into a 1 year Rental Agreement. At the end of that, you can return the receivers or sign again for a further length of time, probably another year.

With the release later this year of the MPEG 4 units, Renting for 1 year and getting all the installation costs back as programming seams the way to go.

Although mentioned in another thread this is not what I had to pay (about 3 months ago now).

As an existing customer I had to pay a $100 deposit up front which was credited to my next bill. (Seems silly to me and I said so on the phone. I've been a customer for 5 years or more). This was on a 9200 1 year rental.

Installation was free. (unless that was the $100 charge that was credited back).

I got a new 20" dish, 2 LNBs and the SW44 as my existing setup was at capacity (numerous 5900s and 3100s).

Our Nimiq 2 upgrade promo gives an existing client who does not have an upgrade kit to get:
-upgrade kit installed free of charge
-HD receivers installed free of charge (if on the same call)


You will be charged for
-the upgrade kit cost on a credit card
-the rental certificate if you are renting the receiver (50$ for 6100 and 100$ for 9200)


You will be credited for
-the upgrade kit cost on your next BEV bill AFTER you took programming requiring the upgrade (HD or international)
-the rental certificate when you activate the receiver


You will also get
-6 months of HD programming for free, service that will automatically continue if you don't call us durinf the 6th month to remove it from your account

Well I am an existing customer with a 9200, 5800, and 3100. And when I emailed the Bell Mothership, the regarding upgrading my 3100 to another 9200 the response was go purchase one for $599. Some incentives to retain my business. What good would install free be, all I need is the receiver, and to plug it in the wall. I own all my receivers, get nailed $20 a month for something I will never own doesnt seem like a good deal at all.

You woudn't be eligible for the promo with free install...cause you already have a 9200 meaning you already have an upgrade kit installed. The only way you will have to avoid paying the receiver is to threat to disconnect and they might offer to waive off the rental for 12 months, maybe even 24!
