I have a new computer with Vista Premium. I discovered that my AVI video files will not play with Media Player, I get sound but not picture. Some research suggested that I needed to download and install a Codec package . I downloaded one that seems to be working well for other people. During the install I get the following error message:

Has that changed in Vista? It always used to be that you had to hold the shift key down while right-clicking the file and choosing "Run As..." and then you choose the administrator account.

Since he was logged in as ADMIN I doubt those suggestions will work. What codec pack did you try to install? You mentioned AVI so I imagine you are talking XVID or DIVX right?
For the DIVX codecs get them at http://divx.com. For the XVID codecs get them at http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml

Right clicking and using "Run as an Administrator" allowed the install to go through. As Jake pointed out since I was already logged in as an administrator I was surprised that it worked - guess it Vista needs to be really sure about things before it allows such an install. My AVI file now plays fine through Media Player. The package I downloaded was called Vista Codec Package V4.2.6
thanks for the help. |
