Default Samsung 95D and 96D LCD models

Does anyone know when we can expect the new Samsung 95D Series and 96D Series LCD TV's in Canada? I'm anxiously waiting for the LN-S4095D 40" 1080p model, which is already available in the states for US$3,299 at Best Buy.

We're still stuck with the old Samsung 51D Series 1080i models in Canada...

The LN-S4692D does not display 1080p unfortunately..

Both the LN-S4695D and LN-S4696D have 6000:1 contrast and display 1080p, the only different being that the 96D has a DCR tuner.

The hot models this fall will be the new D90U series from Sharp (37" and 45" 1080p), plus the new Sony Bravia XBR3 1080p series. So far only the Sharp Aquos LC37D90U is available in Canada, its absolutely beautiful.

I can't wait to see how the 40" Samsung 95D model looks, to choose between this and the Sharp.

Sharp cancelled the 45" D90U. The 37" is out now. In sept/oct a new Sharp line of 42/46/52 1080p will be out which may be stripped down feature wise compared to the D90U.

I too live in Calgary and am also looking at the Samsung 46" 1080p models. Which Visions did you order your tv from and how long did they say it will take to get them in?

I was originally looking at the Sony tvs but I'm getting tired of waiting for the Sony 46" XBR2 to come in. I'm certain they'll be in the same price range as the Samsung.

Checking the specs on the LNS4696 and it appears to take 1080p on the component inputs.

The Pioneer 1016 looks to be a good match for that TV!

well i've had a 4096 on order from Visions for over a month now. They let me know last week that date of delivery still hasn't been confirmed, but expect end of August. They also let me know that the new sony xbr2's will also be in at around the same time, actually they're kinda predicting they'll be in stock sooner then the samsungs. btw, im in Vancouver area.

So now the decision is what to get... Any others out there order their set and get a delivery date?

The Sony XBR2 will definitely be more expensive, but it has 1:1 pixel mapping for 1080p inputs, whereas the Samsung apparently overscans (so I've read on AVSForum). So if you want to connect an HTPC via HDMI/DVI you won't be able to get 1920x1080 resolution filling the screen on the Samsung.

Both the Sony and Samsung use the same panel from the same factory with the same specs, but Sony has different electronics and maybe different backlighting (just a guess). It's debatable which has better PQ, people seem to disagree, so it's best to judge for yourself.

Did you get a quote for the 4096, if so, how much? The XBR2 MSRP is $4500...

I hear you on the 1:1 maping. but from avs...

"The Nvidia drivers seem to be better suited to HDTV adjustment than ATI. I gave up trying to get a decent 1080p screen with ATI. I switched to the Nvidia card and it easily allows you to select a 1080p HDTV resolution with underscan adjustment that fits perfectly on the screen. ATI seems to only allow you to underscan an interlaced image but not a progressive one. OK it’s not 1:1 pixel mapping, at least not according to the test images referenced in these forums, but can anyone realy tell the difference? The image is crystal clear and spectacular, superior to my Viewsonic VP191b which does do 1:1 at its native resolution."

makes me feel better about it. I too have been following that thread on avsforum. as for price, its not much more then the samsung, i got a qutoe for 3877. have you been able to find a better deal?

Default Samsung LN-S4695D Displaying DVDs better than HDTV

I have a Samsung LN-S4695D 46 inch LCD TV, a Samsung HT-TQ85 HTiB 1080i upscaling DVD player, and a Rogers SA-8300HD PVR. Both the SA-8300HD PVR and HT-TQ85 HTiB are connected to my TV via HDMI. While I can pass the HDMI signal from the PVR through the HT-TQ85 to the TV, I am not doing that. The PVR is to the TV’s HDMI 1 input and the HT-TQ85 to HDMI 2 input.

My problem is that I am finding that the picture quality of DVDs is better than that of HD channels. HD shows from the PVR often have blocking and blurring that I do not see when watching DVDs. These problems most often occur with fast action, fire or lighting effects. Any ideas on why this could be occuring or advice on determining the cause?

Mark F. This is macroblocking, which has been discussed extensively on this forum. A proper setup of the TV (and STB) will help. Please see the following post where this was discussed, and read the links in that post.
