the aspers are getting more control. From a press release issued today.
WINNIPEG, Aug. 8 /CNW/ - CanWest Global Communications Corp. has received a broadcast licence to launch a new FM radio station in Winnipeg, the Company's home city. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission announced that CanWest's application for a new FM station was approved today. The station, which will broadcast at 99.1 will be programmed to appeal to the underserved community of jazz lovers. CanWest President and Chief Executive Officer Leonard Asper said the decision is great news for CanWest that represents a first, but important step into Canadian radio. "We have always considered radio a logical and positive next step in our multi-media strategy. We hope this new radio licence heralds the eventual creation of a national radio system just as we entered the TV industry 25 years ago with a single TV station in Winnipeg, which became part of the Global Television Network." Asper added that the application, which garnered tremendous support from the local music community, as well as Winnipeg advertisers and community leaders, won because it focused on a genre that has not been well represented on Canadian radio. "We want to send out a heartfelt thanks to all the people who supported this application through their letters and emails," said Asper. "We will not disappoint, we will provide an on-air home to fans who already appreciate smooth jazz music and hope to attract many more new jazz listeners along the way." The new radio station forms part of a two-pronged entry into music programming, the other being the planned digital specialty channel COOL TV, for which CanWest has already received a licence. The CRTC decision will also provide an economic benefit to the City of Winnipeg as CanWest hires additional people to operate the station, which we expect to go on the air in early 2003. The radio station will not be the first for CanWest. |

It's good to see another jazz station pop up. But I notice more and more smooth jazz coming up in places like radio stations and compilations. Is smooth jazz something like the next big thing in the genre? I'm a swing fanatic myself.
I wonder what Cool TV will be? Maybe it's a youth channel? |
