Default New Solar Flare To Arrive Tonight 2012/07/13

News sites are reporting a massive solar flare that may disrupt communications over the next day or two. Northern Lights watchers should be in for a treat.

The sun unleashed a huge flare Thursday, the second major solar storm to erupt from our star in less than a week.

There was a very good article in NatGeo last month: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/20...ms/ferris-text
about solar storms and their potential threat to our electronic systems. This one shouldn't be too bad according to what I've read today. It got me to do something I have been considering for years. I just ordered a glass solar filter for my telescope to be able to see these storms and flares.

Here is a multiview-multiwavelength video capture of the flare.

There is a mission scheduled for a Soyuz rocket to launch from Kazakhstan on Saturday night with three on board, hope it does not interfere, and only gives them spectacular Northern Lights for their journey to the ISS! I hope to see both in my star gazing this weekend..!
