Default Nimiq 6 (New Bell Satellite) Discussion

On March 15th Nimiq 6 arrived at Baikonur in preparation for a May 17th launch on the Proton-M/Briz-M vehicle. Nimiq 6 will be placed at 91.1.

I forget the upshot of this sat but I seem to recall reading that it provides no additional bandwidth, so no real gains from this sat, besides replacing the current bird there?

Would love to be corrected on this.

You are correct, nothing new, just more powerful than the 2 birds at 91 degrees right now.

The footprint will also change and cut off most of the US.

Thankfully I will still be good to go with the standard Dish 500.

Question

Looking at that map, why does the singal reach so far into the Atlantic Ocean?

Also with a stronger singa;l does this mean less chance of rain fade?

It will help to some degree but it would be impossible to totally eliminate rain fade. The big cause of rain fade I noticed when I had Bell TV was not the weather locally where I lived but a down pour at the uplink center in Toronto. Bell should have a second uplink center else where in the country.

Pretty poor planning and spending of money on their part, no?

Hummm. Is it true that Bell enjoys a "fast growing number of subscribers" over satellite?

Default What is WestJet going to do with new N91?

Just got back from Jamaica on a WestJet flight and we had about 30 live Bell tv channels in the seatback tv's. Most channels cut out just before Cuba and I assume that is the limit of the current N91 footprint. But when the new one goes up, there will be no reception south of Ohio, from what I have seen. So what do you think they will do? Directv was in our hotel room on the island (snicker).

They won't do anything, when the plane is in the new footprint area you will have TV, and when it is out of the area you will not just like you experienced going to Cuba. Only now the loss of TV will be a earlier in your flight if you are going south.

I hope they broadcast the launch live. They don't have channel 198 anymore so I guess they would have to use 272/273?

What kind of rain or snow are we talking about for rain/snow fade.

In the last 2 weeks I have lost tv for a total of 50 minutes.
The first time it was 40 minutes and second time(yesterday) it was 10minutes. I am not surprised as it was thunderstorms with strong gusting winds and heavy downpour. You can't beat mother nature.LOL.

I have noticed that the rain/snow fade on a 51cm dish is when there is a heavy downpour or snowing big flakes heavily.I don't think this new 91 will be able to prevent that but hope it can reduce downtime.

Not complaining as I have been with Bell for sometime and absolutely hate cable.Hehehehe
