Default Advice on Rooting a Telus Android Device?

I have an HTC Desire HD with Telus. As I understand, Telus isn't very friendly to rooting, but perhaps it can be done. Does anyone have advice on the easiest way to go about it? I figure a standard Cyanogenmod for now, but especially I want to prepare for when an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM is made available. Thanks.

My best advice is to read the rooting stickies for your device over on XDA first. Then read them again. Then read them one more time.

Chances are somebody on Telus will probably have either done it successfully, in which case you are good to go, or will have tried and failed.

It's good to read it through a couple of times because it will make you comfortable about what to expect. When I rooted my first device I encountered a hiccup part way through and thought I had bricked my phone. Several deep breaths later, I realized I hadn't, and finished the process successfully.

As far as what ROM to flash, check out the different ROM threads. I personally found the CM ROMs had too much unwanted stuff. I prefer the minimalist ROMs that strip out all the carrier junk and other bloatware.

I'm running an AOSP ROM on my Nexus One so if they have one of those for the Desire I'd look at that.

Good luck!

I have the CM rom on my touchpad, but did not like it so much on my htc desire. I think im just hooked on HTC Sense... Since my WM6 days Sense has just hooked me. I love the widgets and i love the way the people contacts merge all things together..

+100 on visiting XDA

I admit another reason I haven't done it before is to keep Sense. But I see some roms like Android Revolution HD have a better version of Sense. Telus keeps me down to Sense 2.1, but some phones are on 3.5.

I also have CM7 on my Touchpad, so that's my only rooting experience now.

From what I have been reading on xda, I might have luck with the Advanced Ace Hack Kit. It's a one-click process.

The touchpad was by far my easiest rooting romming experience..

There are lots of great Sense roms. I currently run Android 2.3.3 with a Sense version that is a mix of 2.1 and 3.0 acesmod007 What i found with full on 3.0 or 3.5 was some lag.

I am excited for an ICS rom but will miss sense if and when it becomes available.

I rooted and modded my Telus Milestone back in the day and it was the best thing to do to keep an aging (aging...so sad when something that is just over a year old is aged) phone alive.

Now I don't have to worry about that too much (at least for the next year or so) with my Nexus S and its official releases.
