Default Apple crushes forecasts again, iPad backlogged

Shares of the world's most valuable technology corporation rose 3 percent after it said a record 18.65 million units of the category-defining iPhone -- its flagship product -- moved in the March quarter, outpacing the 16 million or so expected.

Apple sold just 4.69 million iPads -- which command an 80 percent share of a burgeoning tablet market in which Motorola Inc and Samsung Electronics also compete -- but investors argued that would not detract from strong long-term demand.

Even Mac sales were up 28%.

Pretty impressive.

Just a side note, but it's rather obvious that iPad sales dipped in the last quarter based on the expectation that iPad 2 would be released this spring. A lot of reports I have read fail to mention this, but it's a no brainer.

iPad sales will be rockin' for the next three quarters.

Looking back at the past 5-7 years with Apple, I'm inclined to think their retail store strategy can be directly linked to their market share gains in the personal computer sector.

Sure, the iPod/iPhone halo effect is at play, but one only has to walk into an Apple Store to see how powerful putting product into people's hands can be.

I'm not at all surprised by this.

Nine months ago I had never even used an Apple product other than an early iPhone model for less than a week.

Fast-forward to today and we have 2 macbook pro's, an iPad2 and a time capsule. When the cell phone contracts are up, the iPhone's are currently at the top of the replacement list.

This coming from someone in the technology industry who wouldn't have even considered Apple a short time before then. Work has necessitated that I stay on top of the microsoft and unix / linux sectors. It's nice coming home and having the hardware and software just work and do what they are supposed to do.

See this is the part I don't understand. One day, someone will have to explain to me why IT guys hate Apple so much. I sometimes joke that there wouldn't be half as many IT jobs if everyone was running Macs, but there has to be a more "logical" explanation.

You just don't know the right IT guys. Back in the day we did IBM mainframe support using Macs while the rest of the company used PCs.

I remember buying IBM shares because mainframe sales were backlogged, maybe it's time to take advantage of the iPad backlog?

Apple is definitely doing something right on the retail side. Every time I'm in the Eaton's Centre and walk past the Apple Store, it's packed - and I mean PACKED - with people.

Pretty hard to question Apple's results. They pretty much say it all but I don't think there is a big supply backlog for the iPad.

I've been to several electronic stores and department stores while here in the US (AL, FL, TX) and all the stores have stock. I know there are several models, especially with Verizon and AT&T versions and I don't know how many are sold daily but stock does not appear to be a problem.

I dunno, I ordered a iPad 2 from the Apple website on April 1 and it still hasn't shipped yet. I just checked and the delivery date has been pushed back again, and I'm supposed to receive it on May 2. Sure, anecdotal stores is not the same thing as real data, but if there is plenty of supply, why did Apple push back my delivery date?
