Default MTS bringing Fibre to the Home to Steinbach and Dauphin and more

Customers will be able to enjoy MTS Ultimate TV and faster Internet speeds

Steinbach residents will soon have access to the next generation of high definition television and the fastest broadband connections available as MTS deploys its fibre-to-the-home network (FiON) in the community over the coming months.

Quote:
Customers on MTS's fibre optic network will have access to the most advanced consumer telecommunications services that MTS offers including MTS Ultimate TV and a new suite of high-speed Internet products with speeds up to 25 Mbps and potential future speeds of over 100 Mbps.

The award winning MTS Ultimate TV service provides Manitobans with the most feature rich television service in Canada, delivering over 56 HD channels and the industry leading Whole Home PVR service that can record and playback TV programs on any connected TV in the home as well as many other great features.

MTS is investing $125 million over the next five years to make its Ultimate TV service available to an additional 120,000 homes in close to 20 Manitoba communities through the deployment of its fibre optic network. MTS Ultimate TV is currently available to 95 per cent of Winnipeg households, and in Brandon, Portage La Prairie and a growing number of homes in Selkirk.

They haven't updated their FiON website yet.

I wonder what are the exact internet speed plans you can get on the FiON network, or are they the same as in Winnipeg?

I checked an address in Selkirk that has FTTH. The plans are the same as Winnipeg except they don't have the Bolt plan (which is basically shared bandwidth with TV). The plans are:

Light 256 Kbps
Lightning 7.5 Mbps
MAX 15 Mbps
Super MAX 25 Mbps

MTS has added Thompson to the list of FTTH communities and increased the number of FTTH communities to 25 by 2013. Most new housing developments in Winnipeg will also be FTTH.

Default Cause & Effect

Soon some adverse affects to come.
Soon to deploy only 3801s to all copper installs.
Soon to need all available 3800s for fibre installs.

So MTS is laying cable in front of my house the past couple of days, anyone know when we'll actually get service here?

I switched over from BellTV to MTS for TV today. I'm in Killarney. Installer was around for about 2 hours. The modem/router is a Pace 5168N. Nice to see it is Wireless N and gigabit. I find the picture for HD slightly sharper with MTS than Bell. I don't watch much SD at all so never checked that out. The one thing I miss is the option to just show subscribed channels when in the guide that I had with Bell.

Also upgraded my Internet to FION50. Just did a quick speed test wirelessly on the laptop and it was 45 down and 4.5 up so just a bit under the advertised.

Great to see some smaller towns in Manitoba having access to such great Internet speeds and IPTV!

I had a hunch you would be one of the first in Killarney.

However, you can customize the channel list on each STB and un-check any channels you don't watch.

I've been waiting patiently for Killarney to launch And that's what I've done - just unchecked channels I'm not subscribed to.

Probably not, when MTS TV first came in, they did not start in that area but started out in the far west of Winnipeg (Glendale/ Westwood). I live about 5 blocks west of the Gateway Head end and it took a few years for MTS to bring TV to my street.

I thought when MTS TV was announced MTS would work outwards from the Gateway exchange head end and not the piecemeal way they did it.

There were some streets near the Alpine exchange building in ST. Vital that did not get MTS TV until a few years ago due to underground copper cable cable issues that needed to be resolved.

My thinking is that MTS will not install Fion into neighbourhoods that currently have access to MTS Ultimate TV. Newly built neighbourhoods and rural additions will be the primary focus of Fion rollouts.
