Default Post-Transitional Digital OTA Channels In Canada

Yes City will be coming down to 51 at an output power of 23kW.

CFTO, your not going to like, it will be moving back to VHF-HI 9 at a dismal 2.4kW. Some say it may work, other say there will be issues. Time will tell.

CHCH is also moving back to VHF-HI 11 after the transition and will be broadcasting at around 6.1kW.

OMNI 1 will be moving down to it's old analog channel (47) with a power boost from 15kW up to 99kW.

Global will be moving from its very high UHF to 41, and its power level will go from a current 3kW to 100kW.

CBC will get a power boost from 38kw to 100kW.

SunTV will move from 66 to 40 and get a power boost from 2.81kW current to 107kW.

SunTV from Hamilton will get a power boost from 8.2kW to a staggering 493kW.

You might be better off with getting CKCO on 13 (est. 12kW) post transition than CFTO. We will have to wait and see.

OH and I forgot, TVO is supposed to go to it analog channel 19 at a power rating of 106kW.

This is the allotment plan Dec 20 2008. I don't believe there have been any update since then.

http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.nsf/vwapj/DTV_PLAN_Dec08-e.pdf/$file/DTV_PLAN_Dec08-e.pdf

Hmm! won't post as a link, so you'll have to copy it and then paste it into your browser search bar.

Here are the Toronto and Hamilton allocations. The bold 1950

Bear in mind that nothing is carved in stone until the stations involved actually apply to build their post-transitional facility.

The only stations that are scheduled to stay on their current digital channel will be CBLT, OMNI2, and the SunTV repeater in Hamilton.

tvlurker,.. Nice allotment breakdown.

OK,.. confusion sets in. But, then again, at my age that happens quite often

Just to verify what I see in the list:

I thought Toronto was to be CBLT 5.1psip [20.1RF] post transition. Could the post DTV allotment be a typo or do they really lose their current 5.1psip slot?

And RF 5, 8, 21, 30 are pending applications ?

And RF 8 will be limited contour [directional] ?

And RF 18, 35, 24 will be open for bids ?

Am I reading this correctly?

CBC is free to keep 5.1. Oops, you're right, in the original posting I said that only SunTV Hamilton and OMNI2 were staying on their transitional channels. (I'll fix that.) CBLT is staying, too. CBC stays on 20, and probably will continue to identify itself as 5.1 in PSIP.

No, they are just allocations available for any new applicants.

Quote:

Yes, but my reading of the pattern is that it is probably protecting adjacent channel 7 in Watertown, with the deepest null at 103 degrees. If it was protecting Global on DTV 8 in Bancroft, the deepest null would be at 45 degrees.

I'd have to study the rest of the plan for Southern Ontario. I'm sure they're taken somewhere else nearby.
But in reality, these allocations get changed around when it comes down to the actual engineering application. This plan is basically a line-in-the-sand in negotiations with the FCC.

Default Post-Transitional OTA Channels Across Canada

It looks like we should know the plan for post-transition by this Fall:

Quote:
The Commission notes that it has recently streamlined its licensing framework for DTV transmitters with the issuance of Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2010-69. Notwithstanding the significantly expedited licensing process, the Commission expects applications for post-transition DTV transmitters to be filed by the following dates in order to ensure an orderly transition.
  • 31 August 2010 for the markets of Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa-Gatineau, Montréal, Québec and Halifax; and
  • 31 December 2010 for all other mandatory markets.

By "other mandatory markets" they mean provincial and territorial capitals.

And other markets that currently have 2 or more stations. A list of all mandatory markets is given in paragraph 179 of that same Broadcasting Regulatory Policy.

No, correct me if I am wrong but I beleive markets of more than 300,000 people all must report by 31 August 2010.

Correction: Victoria, London, Kitchener and Windsor all have populations greater than 300,000 people yet don't need to report by August 31.
