Question Simsubs

Thinking of changing to Bell TV, currently with Cogeco Cable. With Cogeco, they will simsub the east, but my west coast feeds are originals.

How does Bell TV do simsubs? Is it both coasts so I will always have them or is it like Cogeco where they won't touch the west?

In my experience they not only touch the west they destroy it. Simsubbing is alive and well on the wet coast.

Is that because you're in the west? Like if you watch an east coast feed is it also simsubbed there?

I figure because Cogeco doesn't carry Global West or CTV West maybe that's why they don't simsub. So if Bell does, then I guess they can overlay both coasts. That sucks.

Bell TV peforms simsubs at the uplink, so they are seen nationally regardless of location. Normally you'll be subbed with a Toronto or Vancouver feed.
They lack the technology to do simsubs at the receiver level.

I wonder if Bell can send down a firmware update to only have to simsub the appropriate areas?

They can't. Unlike cable, the signal Bell broadcasts is the same nationwide. Selective simsubbing would mean they would need to broadcast both subbed and unsubbed signals at the same time, which makes no sense for them to do.

Default Simsub using unsubscribed channels...

With the old French basic package + US West, channels in the latter will get simsubbed with Vancouver stations to which we're not subscribed.

Kind of interesting.

I'm sure Bell could find a better way to simsub other than to blanket the whole country.

I wish Bell could do Simsubs the way they do blackouts as in certain parts of the country at certain times vs all, but thats not ever going to happen.

It's not Bells' idea to do the simsubs. It's the CTRC that makes all the cable and sat suppliers do it. They know everyone would watch the actual US feed if they could and that is anti Canadian. You must watch the Canadian feed when available. That is why I will never give up my OTA antenna.

Not Bell's nationwide simsub. Simsub is required to all within the Canadian station's broadcast coverage area.

If Bell simsub for a station I don't see how can they do it for only one region. The same sats and transponders are used across the country. They would need double the transponders to do it for some and not others.

Blackouts are "calculated" by the receiver using the blackout string and "zip code" (I don't know how Bell translates this to postal codes) stored in the card. They do not require any additional bandwidth. Your idea would require them to stream two different signals. Multiply this by the number of simsubbed channels, and you'll understand why they do coast to coast simsubbing.

Default 2012 NFL & simulcast problem starts on Sun Sept 9

On Sun Aug 26 at 7pm Global cut off FOX NFL exhibition game that started at 4pm for 7pm cartoon Global simulcast. 4pm game ended at 7:30pm. US evening programming STARTS ONLY AFTER LIVE GAME ENDS since 1968 Heidi game.

Simulcast means SIMULTANEOUSLY AT THE EXDACT SAME TIME but the US networks policy has been for 44 years EVENING PROGRAMMIING does NOT commence until tyhe live event game ends.

That exhibition 49ers at Denver did not go to overtime yet took 3 and a half hours. As well the NFL starting next Sunday has pushed back the kickoff time of what were 4:15pm games to 4:25pm this year. And there also now will be automatic video review on all turnovers and that will add to game length.

On this very site there is a story on Global TV's fall primetime schedule and it has at 7:30pm Sundays they are carrying The Cleveland Show and it says beside the name "simulcast. There is no way the 4:25pm FOX Doubleheader game will only take 3 hours and 5 minutes to 7:30pm when Global will force their signal over people watching the game on FOX.

Game Sunday was cutoff and never put back on both Bell Fibe and Videotron here so it was obviously done by Global to both carriers.

I tried to complain to Bell but they said they didnt do this and told me to call Global or CRTC. CRTC said write a letter and Global you can't even get a person on the phone.

Global obviously calls their Cleveland Show a simulcast in their own words so they will obviously cut-off every FOX doubleheader game at 7:30pm each time FOX does the 2nd game.

starting september 9

Not sure why you are complaining. You recorded Global and you got Global programming.

Next time, just record FOX so if Global switches over to other programming, then you will have the remainder of the game from the FOX broadcast.

Yeah, provided the simsub is done properly.
Which is always the case.
