I watched Letters from Iwo Jima and Pan's Labyrinth on blu-ray this weekend. I'd say they're both better movies. Why? They both tell a good story.

Do you think Avatar is the best movie ever?

Like Ho Chi Min said when asked about the impact of the French Revolution " to soon to tell"
My best movie would be Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid. However it did not age wonderfully, and that is the mark of greatness.

You're saying Butch Cassidy did not age well?

I just watched Butch Cassidy last week. It's still wonderful, and funny. "Jesus, who ARE those guys?", "Think ya used enough dynamite, there, Butch?". Classic lines that still work.
To be honest, the story in Avatar was crap, just a mash up of every cliche in the book. I knew what was going to happen 5 minutes into the movie. In my opinion, James Cameron's storytelling gets worse with every movie he makes. $300,000,000 for that? Think what that money could have been used for, rather than a 3 hour time-waster.

"The Princess Bride": Nice story, great characters, snappy dialogue, swordplay, True Love and Robin Wright Penn.

And all that for only $15M...or just 3% of the cost of "Avatar"!

This could be one loooong thread!

Avatar is an entertaining movie and a technical marvel, but there are TONS of movies that are better. If you're talking about dramatic impact, emotional impact, acting, scripting, dialog, and substance... I would easily consider at least 80% of the titles in my current movie library to be 'better' than Avatar.
