hmmm I have only seen VW at the bottom of reliability rankings. I would only take their cars on a 2-3 year lease and not buy out at the end.

After spending the first ten of my driving years in Japanese cars - two of which were Toyotas - and then the last 10+ in VWs, I can't say there's been an appreciable difference in terms of maintenance/issues/reliability. Both brands have been very good.
However, I do enjoy our VWs (both working on them and driving them) far more than I ever did the Toyotas - and we simply won't even consider anything else now. Driving from northern Vancouver Island to San Diego on two tanks of fuel (total cost ~$60) doesn't hurt my enjoyment of the VW either. It's often confounded my as to how/why they haven't been able to market themselves more effectively here - their cars have always been decent (certainly no worse than some other brands that have sold much better), the owners are often quite enthusiastic about them (see preceding paragraph), they sell well in most other markets worldwide...... just not so great in North America for some reason. |

We have a City Golf on the 5 year lease plan. So far the car is very nice to drive and we're happy with it. It's our first VW.
