I just checked. If you don't enable 480i/p standard, you don't get to use the "passthrough" or upconvert" functionality (SA8300HD) and all SD channels seem to be output at 1080i.

This means that most HDTVs cannot properly stretch the SD channels and it also may produce a poorer PQ than if you let the TV do the upconversion.

Also, when using those setting I found the same "crap" to the right side of the weather channel as the following poster..
