Special in 2015, then 3 episodes for Season 4

The creators of Sherlock have confirmed the hit BBC One drama will be back for a special in 2015, followed by a fourth series of three episodes.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the special will start filming in January with the series following later in 2015.

The popularity of the show's stars and creators has made it difficult for them to commit to filming more episodes until now.

Francois Caron Good. I wanted to say this for a while.

Charles Augustus Magnussen got what he deserved. And I have to admit that, while I was very surprised at Sherlock's cold-blooded act, I didn't feel bad about it at all.

I've been checking out the comments about the episode on British newspaper sites. People seem to be more critical about the quality of the second episode than about this one. In fact, there's hardly any criticism about the sheer brutality of the murder itself.

I suspect this is because the Brits already had to deal with Rupert Murdoch's very similar blackmail machine where his staff had both paid off and blackmailed public figures and the police, and have hacked many people's phones with relative ease, including accessing and deleting messages from the voicemail of missing and later murdered children.

I'm assuming the lack of outrage over the cold blooded murder of a fictional TV villain is because many people silently wished Rupert Murdoch and his accomplices would suffer the same fate in real life for their own crimes.

57 Yep, they've all aired.

Francois Caron Is it safe now to talk openly about the third series yet?

NeilN Read an interview with the writers/producers where they said they had seasons 4 and 5 plotted out, FWIW.

For me, this season followed the pattern of the prior two. One fantastic episode (episode 2, this season), one middling episode, and one where the climax fell flat.

57 I enjoyed the first two seasons, however, this programme is now very full of itself, also with the poor writing suggested in post 122, as well as the "trickery" so that little of what you watch really matters because the writers feel free to undo (or do) just about anything.

It's still a lot better than most things on TV, but like most (successful) programmes as they go on several seasons, the writing starts to cater to a different audience (Dexter a prime example)

My wife and I don't know if we'll record/watch a season 4 if there is one. It'll probably depend on if we've got lots on our PVR to watch or not.

PS. Since I travelled for 30-40% of my working career, often to many exotic countries, my wife is now asking me if I was CIA or similar, since so many movies and programmes now have one of these people in them.

SE303 Wow!

Now I know what I was missing for the first 2 seasons.
If you havent seen it yet - make sure you record it - this is top notch TV.
(on a lighter note - I was so happy to see that Stephen Moffat not only didnt rest on his laurels after the great early-naughts comedy series COUPLING, but he even went on to bigger and better things. Bravo!)

NeilN Spoilers for S03E03
Interesting plot, flashy production, chilling villain, marred by a climax requiring liberal use of the stupid stick.

"Gee, all the blackmail material exists only in my head."

"Oh really?" BANG!

Even if Sherlock didn't shoot him, how long would have Magnussen lasted once Holmes got the word out that there was no blackmail papers? You would think the writers would have a clue, having done a similar plot with Irene Adler.

asif9t9 What I like is the writing and how the dialogue flows. Of course the whole Sherlock premise can get a little tiring. I do wish for "mystery" shows that let us at home guess who did it with info we've seen in the show, as opposed to just throwing a bunch of convenient stuff at us at the end to make it work out.

But the main reason I liked S3 is that Moriarty wasn't around to be the bad guy. He was a terrible foil in the first two seasons. Nowhere near as smart as Sherlock or even Mycroft. I feel like S3 was my favourite yet.

The Mind Eraser

Ignore all the previous opinions if you haven't seen the new season.

I want you to just picture a bright white screen that is so bright, that it forces you to close your eyes and then erases your short-term memory. Who is Mike Holmes? Beats me.

If your eyes are now open, just remember that you have no memory of anything you've read ... including this post.

Count backwards from 10 and then when you reach 0, go read another thread because there is no opinion here that you will remember.

Off you go.
