Jorgek I believe the tower owner has to do is file a report with NAV CAN that the lights are OUT. NAV CAN issues a warning to the aviation folks warning of the situation.

mr.eous ^^ I wondered about that, too. A quick search only found these regulations, that don't seem to specify backup power requirements. Maybe they use batteries on standby for the navigation lights, but knowing how Bell ruins everything it touches, probably not. Curiously, both Bell and Rogers have cell antennas on the Baden tower, so you'd think it'd be in Bell's best interest to prioritize the reliability of their shared emergency generator, but then again, it's Bell: they only care about profits, not providing reliable services!
There's still a handful of employees beneath the 'engineering' title in the Friday evening credit rolls, but I wouldn't be surprised if transmitter site maintenance is anything but regular, anymore, given the never-ending pressure to "do more with less" coming from BCE.

Inglewood Wouldn't they need a generator going to have the aviation lights on the tower? Not sure how they work, but assume they need to be on 24/7 to prevent a plane/jet crashing into it.

LONSat I wonder if anyone had tested the generator in the last few years. Maybe the person who would have tested it was let go somewhere along the way and nobody thought about it because hey power failures never happen anymore. Right?

Inglewood They still have the generator? I thought I saw it on Kijiji....

Jorgek The backup generator is probably out of fuel. Another cost cutting measure!

mr.eous ^^ Yep, it's dead. Probably related to a power outage showing on Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro's outage map near the transmitter in Baden at 5:48PM. An on-site backup generator should have kicked-in, but here we are with another Bell Media fumble.

Checked my car radio: 96.7 CHYM-FM and 105.3 Virgin Radio are also off-air, because they transmit from the same tower. I can't ever remember a time when the Baden tower went dark due to a power outage -- it was even running at full-power, hours and hours into the blackout of 2003. Yet, here we are in 2018, and it can't even manage a localized power outage ten minutes before the six o'clock local newscast...

daggry Anyone else having trouble with CTV Kitchener on 13 this afternoon? I'm not getting any signal.
2017-12-08 02:50 PM
rads47 CTV2 Wingham has not been operating for a number of months.

tvlurker CTV2 Wingham (what you call 33) is only on analog on 8, if it is indeed still operating. I'm pretty sure Bell has applied to shut it down.

rob50312 Hi, your TV fool says it all.2 edge stations are usually not reliable.Stations showing LOS are to be expected and 1 edge are variable.I suspect if you point both panels at Hamilton you might receive 35.1.

Waterloo Reception

I am not getting the results I would have expected with my setup in Waterloo so was curious if anyone has any tips or advice. Mostly targeting the CTV2 broadcaster (35) but if anyone can explain why I can't find City (31) that would be great as well.

I have a Focus-Antennas-BEST-8HD-180-Directional-Antenna on my roof approx 25 feet up connected to a Focus Hamza LTE TV Antenna Amplifier. It is currently pointed towards Toronto based on the strongest CBC signal I could get. I have 1 split for my TV and a Tablo Device.

I do have a Winegaurd LNA-200 Boost XT available but the Hamza has the LTE filter and higher DB Gain so I setup with that.

My TVFool report is here: TV Fool

What works:
I receive 13 no matter what I do even with the antenna not being for VHF channels.
17 (virtual should be 6) and 28 are strong enough when pointing at Toronto so no issue there.
36 and 15 come in fine, 36 can get pixels sometimes.
20 (CBC) is solid, in fact it's my strongest most reliable channel in my current setup, I've never seen it go out.
25 (French CBC) also is solid.
19 (TVO) works most the time. Some strong windy nights it has pixeled a bit.
41 Toronto Global pixels often but generally is fine.
32 (WNLO) I have seen come in a few times in warm mornings and evenings.
44 (City) This channel pops up about once a week for a few hours along with the omni 1 and 2 stations (40, 47).

What Doesn't work:
8, 9, 10 I don't get these, only using a UHF antenna so no surprise. I shouldn't need any of these channels anyway as they have UHF equivalents.
35 (CTV2 Hamilton) I have only seen come in once in over a month yet it's rated fairly high in my tvfool report, any ideas? I've tried rotating half and the entire antenna directly at it but nothing worked and nearly all other channels suffered.
33 (CTV2 London repeater) never seen this channel work. I suspect 33 is not an actual live channel yet and they are still on 8, anyone know how to find out?
31 (City) I can't this work reliably either, I tried pointing antenna in it's general direction but no signal strong enough.

rads47 cdnmr,

Great to hear you've got the CM4228 ready to go up. Please post your results here once you've got it installed!

cdnmr I will measure the height once I mount it this weekend. Depending on my results may be looking for a pre-amp.

I picked up the CM HD4228 last night (came pre-mounted to an 8 foot pole), connected it to my TV and with the antenna 6 feet off the ground leaning against my house, pointing general direction of Burlington I pulled in 17 channels. A few were cutting in and out. I am excited to see how things are after I get it up on the tower and aimed.

cdnmr Thanks Rads47 and Jase88.

I dont think I'll bother with Buffalo in that case.

My tower is probably 30 feet high but there is an old antenna on it (not sure of the make/model-was there when I bought the place 5 years ago) so I would be mounting to the side of the tower or on the roof of my second story. In either case antenna would be approx 22-24 feet above ground.

This past weekend I connected the old antenna that is on my tower, plugged in the "ChannelMaster 0064C" power supply I found in basement following the old coax (I assume other end is plugged into pre-amp) and ran a scan but only got one channel (36-1) and it was a pretty pixelated picture. I dont have a rotor controller to re-aim the antenna, nor do I know if the rotor itself will even turn. It is currently pointed at Burlington/Hamilton just inside the treeline running towards the back of my property.

Found a local guy selling his CM HD4228 that I am planning on picking up. It's on the antenna list from this site so expect it will suit my needs and location.
