Peter,
I just read your message -- only 2.5 years late! We turn the fan from auto to high, when it's hot and humid for AC, to reach the bedrooms. It's never cold enough to need high fan to reach bedrooms in winter, fortunately.
Interesting that you considered 2 separate units too. We had one outside compressor coil fail last fall, The first day we needed heat, it gave out. The Fujitsu warranty covered 100% of the cost. Meanwhile we had the other unit providing heat from the downstairs, since our stairway is open concept.
We live in Berwick, NS and the coldest overnight low last winter was -13C so not much of a test on the units. We've yet to switch to backup heating for the 6 years of ownership. Most of our neighbours also have fujitsu heat pumps now; electricity is brutally expensive in NS. Most of NS doesn't need a/c but the Valley is unbearable in summer, without it -- similar heat and humidity to southern ON.
Bert
