I am planning to switch my TV/internet/phone to Telus since I'm getting really sweet deal.

But many people have told me to stay away from Telus. Their internet sucks, etc.

I will be getting atleast a 1 year contract, so I want to be sure I'm getting the right thing. Is Telus internet reliable? I don't want super fast speeds but with the 3mbps plan I hope to get atleast 250kbps downloads?

Please provide honest opinions about Telus so I can make my decision easily. I don't want to pay the $120 penalty fee.

I wouldn't sign up for any ISP with contracts, but that's just me.

I'm also not a fan of DSL, though I know a lot of people are.

I was a Telus high speed customer since 1998. Rock solid reliable. My only complaint was that they didn't compete in the speed (or price) department compared to cable. But then again, consistent 3MB or 6MB ain't too shabby!

Maybe once a year for one day there may be Email glitches, but nothing too serious.... And in 17 months, only had the connection go out once for about 15 minutes to 30 minutes. Didn't even bother calling support.

DIGITALEight, it's cool you can get the full meal deal from Telus - my area isn't wired for the iptv or the Hi Speed Enhanced yet :(
One small thing I noticed on the Telus website that may be a bonus to some is the free wireless gateway Telus offers.

I had Telus high speed and paid the penalty to get out of my contract, mostly because I found it unreliable and their service poor.

1. After having my router/modem for 4 months the unit stopped working. I thought no big deal I'll just go back to the Telus store I bought it from and they will replace it. Boy was I wrong... I had to send it to D-Link's repair shop in Ontario somewhere and was without internet for 3 weeks.

2. After about 1 yr I started getting 1 or 2 dropped connections a night. The last straw was they finally sent out a tech and I knew more about configuring my connection than he did.

I will say though when it worked it was a consistent speed. I'm with Shaw now and find my connection very stable now compared to years ago.

Well the problem with reviews of DSL compared to Cable, is that there are Fanboys for each one.

DSL.
Consistant speed 24/7. But not as fast as higher Cable packages. Telus TV package is 3Mbps Internet speed and then for the TV portion, there is dedicated speed for the TV that does not take away from your internet(but maximum two TV's). ..Throttling on DSL? I don't do torrents or such, but no throttling from Telus that I know of. And 60GB cap that is not solidly enforced, unless you keep going over each month.

Cable.
Speeds can vary depending on the time of day/night(also dependant on overloaded Node). Some reviews of service being disrupted for whatever reason... Throttling of Torrents and sometimes just killing your Torrents as well. Cap is ?GB and pay if you go over. Rogers is evil. Shaw is Evils little brother.

Can anyone add any more for one side or the other? Since I made this sound good for DSL. Ooops.

Very pleased with Telus ADSL extreme and the recent pricing change also.

I've been on Enhanced for nearly 2 years. Experience similar to Alternate's except for the slower download speed (was getting 317 KBps yesterday on Bittorrent - on wifi connected computer which got 6-8 KBps faster than the hardwired computer!) No throttling or varying d/l speeds is nice.

Bandwidth limits? Just checked the account and though we got 60 GB/month, the usage chart for the past 6 months says 0 GB used out of 20 GB and I know I go way over 60 GB/month.

Went to Telus because Shaw cut off our cable modem service when they did something to the tenant's basement cable connection and couldn't schedule a reconnection for over 10 days! Ordered Telus and the modem was delivered and we were up and running within 5 days (so 5 days faster than for Shaw to reconnect us).

The original 2wire modem burnt out within less than a year. Replacement took about 4-5 days to arrive. The Siemens wifi router modem doesn't work worth a damn as a wifi router.

You must realize that DSL performance depends mostly on your area and the quality of the line to your house.

TELUS can qualify you to see how good your line is using their loop qual tools and should be able to approximately tell you the level of service that you should expect.

When I was in Vancouver, I lived in a place where TELUS could only do 1.5Mbps due to high attenuation. It was pretty reliable though, so I kept it.

What you could do is find out if Telus will give you a trail period to test out the services. Not sure if they do that, but it is worth a shot.

i am in morninville (close to edmonton) and moved a little over 2 years ago, had horrible luck with shaw cable so hooked up both shaw and telus and tested for a month. both offered ony 3mb service here but shaw couldnt even do 1mb and telus did a consistant 2.5mb. i have had telus for the whole time now and its been great. my only complaint is they upgraded my town to 6mb service but didnt inform me. when i found out and tried to upgrade they couldnt do it becouse there were no more faster connections available. (they limit amount for quality control). They did however give me a $5 discount for 1 year.
Another note is i play a lot of online games (xbox), some games choose host by best connection etc. I play with people in us that have 30 or 50mb connections and it still picks me as host due to better connection quality.

I have been very happy with the enhanced internet from telus. I find that the free gateway works good and the reliability is rock solid. I was going to switch to shaw because of some great offers on bundling with my cable last year, but Telus matched shaws rates. I usually get download speeds around 280 kbps to 320 kbps. I had shaw in the early 2000s and really found reliabilty to be a problem in my location.

I got Telus TV installed yesterday. The tech switched the wires that run from the back alley pole to the house box to the newer pair of wires. My top D/L speed has increased from the 307-312 KBps range to 335-339 KBps range (may be higher but I haven't had a good feed).

Telus TV deals are sweet but not phone and internet. I'll have to use 3mbps internet to watch Telus TV (currently using Shaw 10mbps)or subscribe to home phone service that doesn't compete Shaw. I think Telus has to allow subscribing ONLY to Telus TV.

BEWARE: I decided to try telus high speed BUT I had to move into my sons basement suite for about 6 months while my new home was getting its finishing touches, I explained that I wanted it in the basement suite gave them the address and WAS VERY CLEAR that was for only about 6 months and then gave them my new address to make absolutely sure that it was in the area they supply to and ---TELUS (they sell, cells, internet etc) REPLY, oh no problem yes we can move our services over for you and guess what on a 3 year contract you receive a flat screen monitor well after I moved GUESS WHAT it couldn't be supplied there so I had to choice but to cancell it was no good to me AND THEN OF ALL THINGS they charged me $199.00 on my bill because I cancelled it and in NO WAY would they give me my money back they said well you got a flat screen monitor and I said take it back it is still in the box NEVER USED and that again was a no (this was a costly experience)

If you receive a 'promotional gift' from Telus(or other companies), and you cancel early, you have to pay a pro-rated fee on the item. The promotional item is sometimes paid for monthly, as a part of your contract.
If you move outside of a Telus served area, you have to pay the pro-rated fee on the promotional item received. But the contract portion is usually canceled without fee.

And the call support agents don't have the greatest information for where the DSL is available if the house is on the edge of the system. Only a tech would know otherwise.
