I have been trying to figure out if there's a way to turn off the wireless guitar without turning off the system altogether or unplugging the receiver?

On the 360 you hold down the xbox button and select turn off controller, like any other controller. On the PS I'd imagine it's the same deal, but I don't have it for the PS3.

You're right, that's where I was expecting to find the turn off option but I don't see it when the controller is a guitar. All it shows are "Quit Game" "Controller Setting" and "Turn off system". However, the turn off controller options shows when I am using a Sixaxis controller:confused:

Remove the batteries?

CT is right... if this is a 360 you should be able to press and keep held down (for 3+ seconds) the green Xbox button and select "turn off controller". I just did this the other day so the option should be there...

Sorry, I forgot to mention I have a PS3.

I guess removing the battery is the only option for me then... hopefully there will be a patch for this annoying issue.
