Looking for some suggestions on a half decent non HDD DVD recorder to give as a gift. It will be mainly used for recording some TV shows from basic cable.
I notice walmart had a Samsung @ $119 and a Magnavox reduced to $87
and I am open to any other suggestions
Thanks
Mark

Check the Future Shop Boxing Day flyer. They have a Toshiba (that upconverts) and a Pioneer model with HDD.

I got my Samsung DVD R 175 form EBay form a seller called Kortronix. Item works well so far and is compatible with DVD +/- R disks both single and double layer. Price was $130 but this was a refurbished product.

One tip to watch out for is the Macrovision or CGMS-A copy protection that exists on some channels such as Superchannel and Movie Central HD. I found that the SD channels are not affected by this so far but I'm not holding my breath. Any others I don't know as I mostly only record movies.

Sorry, it was BB that had the Pioneer. FS had the Sony.

I didn't post the price here, since I think it's against rules to post store/price in this particular forum.

A bit late now, but I would've recommended either the Samsung at Walmart or the Toshiba at Future Shop. I was planning on getting one of them and they were both sold out here in Fredericton when I checked today.
