: Panasonic PZ800 vs. PZ80

I finally decided to buy a flat screen and the consensus is to go with a 50" Panasonic Plasma. I've narrowed it down to the pz800 or the pz80.

The difference in price is about $800 before taxes.

This will be my main TV in my den. There will be a window facing it but it will be covered with blinds. The TV will be used for regular everyday viewing (Oprah/news/American Idol) plus sports, some movies and at times my kidís video games.

The big question is if the PZ800 is worth the extra money or should I go with the pz80 & spend the extra money on a Panasonic Home Theater System.

Thanks

Please have a look at the stickies at the top of the plasma forum. These models are discussed extensively there.

Then have a look at the following post, useful for those new to the forum:

And the following on TV/AVR features:

Thanks 57...I have read the threads that you referred me to extensively but unfortunately I did not find any real discussions on this question of mine; is the PZ800 is worth the extra money or should I go with the pz80?

If this TV will be used as your everyday TV, and not just for movies, then I would suggest the PZ80. Why pay $800 extra when you are going to only watch some movies. I have the PZ80, and this is a great TV. The PQ is amazing.

PZ80 all the way

If you buy the PZ80 and never look at the 800 you'll probably be very happy. If you look at the 800 then only your eyes can tell if it is a $800 difference (taking into account other non visual features as well, of course).

If you could compare side by side it would make the decision easier...possible?

I suppose it's possible, but to actually compare two panels properly calibrated sitting side by side in a store sounds next to impossible! It's really hard to judge what TV's look like seeing them on display in stores when their settings are usually all over the place.

True enough...and some 19 year old kid in a blue/yellow shirt most likely won't be able to answer half of your questions!

All I can say is go with your gut, and maybe look at the differences I listed back in post #4...maybe that'll clinch it?

Either way, you'll be jazzed when you have ONE in your home and nothing better/worse to compare it to!

have a look at the pz85 from futureshop... its a little higher contrast than the pz80

I purchased 50" pz85 from FS last fall, and all I can say is wow!

wasn't worth the extra bucks for me to upgrade to the pz800 or pz850

just my 2c worth

I've seen both models side by side showing the same HD source. Both sets had the same user settings and the PZ800 looked better. More detail in the picture and colours looked a little richer. If it were my money, I'd go for the PZ800.

Both sets had the same user settings... This comment is meaningless since the optimized settings for the two TVs could be quite different.

Are you sure about this? I was told that the only difference between the PZ85 and PZ80 was the fact that the PZ85 had an input to connect your computer. The PZ80 doesn't. Also the PZ85 is exclusive to Futureshop, according to a Futureshop salesman. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

I still haven't made my purchase yet as the price of the TH-50PZ80 keeps on going down. It is now about $1,000 less than the TH-50PZ800...I think at this point the TH-50PZ80 is the best bang for the buck.

Thanks to all who responded to my inital question.

The main differences between the PZ80 and PZ85:

- PZ85 has a higher contrast ratio (30,000:1 vs 20,000:1)
- PZ85 has a PC Input (VGA)
- PZ85 has a nicer frame
- The 3rd set of inputs are on the side for the PZ85 ... in front for the PZ80

Within Canada, PZ85 is an exclusive @ futureshop.

I own a PZ80 and you are mistakened on one of your points

- The 3rd set of inputs are actually on the side of a PZ80, like the PZ85

As for the frame, I have seen both TV's and the frame looks the same to me.

Are you sure it isnt a PZ800 you own? Because the PZ80's I've seen have the inputs under the front flap. The PZ85 has the piano black finish compared to the matte finish of the PZ80.

Well I feel like an idiot. lol, I just checked my TV and it is in fact in the front, and not on the side. Sorry for my incorrect post.
