: "HD" on the side bars

I give credit to the broadcasters for putting graphics over the side bars when showing up-converted 4:3 picture.

However, I've noticed a few that include "HD" in some fashion for the graphical overlay on the side bars.

Shouldn't that be "Not HD" or similar? After all, if it were HD there would be no need for the overlay?

It's a reminder that you are on an HD channel, so I think it's a good idea.

Remember, for video to be HD, it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be in 16:9 aspect ratio. It is possible to have HD video in 4:3.

Even 480P SD shows will look a little bit sharper on the HD channel because there is no loss of picture quality in transmission.

I thought that was kind of funny too. I like the indication of HD in the logo on the bottom right, as a little logo, but putting HD in the bars is a bit annoying to me.

The first night Conan went HD, he had video of Pam Anderson pole dancing on the sides especially for HD viewers. I kind of prefer that.

The first night David Letterman went HD, he had a "special HD only guest" segment. Some celebrity came out and stood in the 16:9 area of the screen, said hello to Dave and left.
