: TiVos for HD OTA in Canada
andrela 2012-05-18, 05:12 PM Awebber; in short, yes Canadian account will access both US and Canada contents depending on your location (physical or by IP)
WalterP; i have full instant queue on my PS3 and Iphone regardless if USA or Canada.
Another tidbit on Tivo Netflix:
If you are experiencing blackouts during Netflix playback, this is caused by the resolution change through HDMI re-authorisation. To eliminate, goto your Tivo>settings>video>video output formats and select ONE resolution that your TV can handle(usually 1080i).
awebber 2012-05-19, 05:46 PM Thanks andrela, that could be handy if I still have my Netflix.ca account active when I go on vacation, I was expecting to have to cancel .ca and activate .com and possibly be paying for both at the same time. Good to know about this.
I should have my TiVo Premiere in my hands in another week or so. Looking forward to it. As I understand their sub rules from my Series2s, I can sign up to add the P to my account, and I've got 30 days to cancel if I'm not happy with the result. Otherwise I'm in for a year? I'm hoping I can decide within 30 days if it's working or is going to work, but if I'm not sure at that point I'd probably want to cancel and try again later when I have more time to try various solutions, or if I have to abandon the idea for a while, maybe activate again with a Comcast CableCard for the winter and then play with OTA again after the winter.

Chudsmith 2012-05-21, 02:07 PM Hey all is the new Netflix U.S access working with the older TiVo HD units or is this exclusive to the TiVo Premier?
Also I have PS3 using Netflix.ca, Couldn’t get it to work on TiVo as there’s no instant que.
My buddy has the premier so he’ll happy to hear he can finally access You Tube.
Thanks.
andrela 2012-05-21, 07:06 PM The new netfilx interface is only for the premiere.
On tivo HD, you can access netflix using VPN although there is no instant queue.
If you can add to the canadian queue using your PS3, old tivo interface will show te queue that is common with te us content
Chudsmith 2012-05-22, 10:34 PM Thanks Andrela.
awebber 2012-05-28, 11:56 PM I finally had a chance to do a quick test with my TiVo Premiere from Woot tonight. Some unexpected results, I assume this is normal but I'll ask anyway.
I hooked it up in Montreal to an indoor antenna (Terk FDTV2A) and started doing guided setup. It took the postal code, downloaded program info, and then it decided there was a software upgrade. It did that, then re-did Guided Setup (I think), finally going off and getting program information. It's got decent reception on a few stations and not on a few others (it gets 2.1, 6.1, 10.1, 12.1, 15.1, 15.2 (the same?), but it doesn't see 17.1 or 29.1, and 49.1 is at about 20% and pixellating like crazy (that's all from memory but I think it's right). TVFool report for this location is http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d073bb8424f10c0 you can see St. Joseph Oratory out the living room window. I get that 17.1 is in a different position (TVF Signal Analysis says LOS, Interactive Map says 2Edge). But I don't understand 29.1 and 49.1!
Anyway, this was meant as a quick and dirty test of (and post re: ) the TiVo not the antenna, so back to the subject...
During the initial Guided Setup I said I'd "activate later", I didn't have a computer handy and just wanted to get it started since GS can be slow. To my surprise, at this point I've downloaded 2 weeks of program info, can watch live TV, and can record either live or from the guide (recorded 1 show from live and put 5 more in the queue, just to test). Can't access Netflix though, the message is "network unavailable" (I get the hint, I would think a message "pay up" would be more helpful).
How long is this going to work? Will I find the recording(s) stopped at midnight tonight? I was (and am) planning to activate but didn't really want to do it at 10pm since I want to maximize my 30-day test period. I was surprised I could do as much as this without paying, and wonder how much more I can do. I'll be taking it down again tomorrow as I'm just passing through, but I wanted to check.
Thanks!

andrela 2012-05-29, 05:36 AM I think that the tivo trial is for 5 days. You should get many warnings before it stops working. The trial provides full functionality.
Netflix (and youtube) should be working 4-6 hours after the update. It will ask you to sign on.
The premiere tuner is known to be weaker than the tivo HD and it does not like most of the amplified antenna. Unamplified antennas work best.
awebber 2012-05-29, 08:52 AM Thank you, I may let it go the full 5 days. Then I get 35 (or 34) days to test it instead of 30 (29) days. And I may not activate immediately when the 5 days are up, if I'm busy.
This little antenna has an amplifier but I haven't hooked it up. If I end up with an attic antenna split between the TiVo and another TV, I guess I may have to amplify but I'll try not to.
Netflix still not working, when I go to VOD it still says "Network Unavailable". It's been almost 12hr since the update. Maybe it needs activation? I'll be doing that within the week anyway. Or more time? Not a high priority at this point, knowing it [the TiVo] works is more urgent.
Thanks!

jft436 2012-05-29, 12:42 PM Aw there was a major software upgrade and it is presently ongoing it will take about 4/6 weeks to get out to all the customers. I got mine about 3 weeks ago. I like the new upgrade.
If you have a 30 day free trial why not call the 1 800 Tivo number that came with the unit. The will inform you what the conditions of the free trial.
The on screen guide will change from postal postal code to postal code I am somewhat surprised that you are getting some of the station info for the greater Toronto area when you should be getting Ottawa or Montraeal and the associated American stations.
As you know you can do a scan with the Tivo for OTA signals You can also edit the channels that you scan in for the on screen guide.
I have read several comments mainly on this site that Tivo dual tuner is not as strong as the built in ATSC tuner in you tv. So what you got with the TV you may not get with the Tivo. Also this time of year the tropo effect could influence your reception.
Enjoy your new unit by the way you can now get netflix on it which is very recent change for the better.
andrela 2012-05-29, 08:07 PM If netflix still not working, go to settings->channel setting-> my video providers uncheck netflix and youtube, go back, go back in and re-check them.
Then retry netflix. It should work. If not, then it may be due that you have not subscribed the box and no Tivo account.
awebber 2012-05-31, 11:46 PM Thank you both, here's an update on this unit.
I can confirm the time limit for activation is 5 days: my account status is "2: Not set up, 3 days left". TiVo Service Level is "D: 060412" which is 4 days away, but I know from sad experience they consider "June 4" to be at 12:01am, at least in terms of what you've paid for (last year I ended a subscription and was told it ended at 11:59pm the last day, turned out it ended at 12:01am so I paid for a day and got a minute).
I'm not seeing any Toronto stations listed, I must have misremembered some of the numbers. The list is Montreal, US, and Ottawa stations, with only a few checked. Obviously it's different from cable, I guess they have to list all stations possible and then only check a few after an antenna scan, vs. having predefined combinations based on cable packages. Here's the exact list of checked stations FWIW: 2-1 (CBFTDT), 6-1 (CBMTDT), 10-1 (CFTMDT), 12-1 (CFCFDT), 15-1 (CKMIDT1), 15-2 (CKMID2), 17-1 (CIVMDT), 29-1 (CFTUDT), 62-1 (CJNTDT). Others listed but unchecked include WCAX, WPTZ, CHLT, CJOH [with no -*], WVNY, WETK, CFJP, WNMN, WFFF, WCFE. I'm still surprised CJNT came in badly when the others at the same location were good.
I don't have a 30-day trial of the TiVo, I'm trying to get maximum value from their 30-day money back guarantee. So first I've got 5 days and then (hopefully) an additional 30 days to get an antenna working. I can't work on it every day so I may run out of time before I know it's working.
Still no result with Netflix, the unit does have network access (e.g. SameGame works, and I can test connection to the server) though "Network Unavailable" is the error. So it must be because I'm not activated, right? Software Version is 20.2.1.1-01-2-746 and I know it did an update during setup. I would assume it updates straight to current, though that may be a big assumption. There's a main menu item "New Netflix & YouTube Apps" which takes me to a description of each app, unfortunately "Select" after that just throws me back. Under "Settings > Channels" I have only Channel List, Channel Scan, Signal Strength - Antenna, no "My Video Providers". Am I looking in the right place?
The other missing functionality is lack of a MAK (which makes sense, since there's no account associated with it). I guess when I activate I'll have a MAK and be able to pull recordings off it.
Haven't switched to an Ottawa postal code yet, but I will.

andrela 2012-06-01, 01:04 AM If you only want to check your antenna set up, you should be fine without a sub. It will not record and have almost no functionality other than changing channel. I think you will be able to access the DVR diagnostics to check your tuner signals.
Once subcribed, you will have access to more menu items. Good luck!
awebber 2012-06-02, 09:57 PM Thanks, that is a big part of it. At the price I paid ($55?) it would be not much more than a D/A converter. :)
It would be good to know my antenna setup is working reasonably before committing to a sub, that's why I wanted to get it done within 30 days of activating, though that extra time (unactivated, as a tuner + D/A converter) might be helpful.
Something else strange happened, I took the TiVo to Ottawa on Thursday night and hooked it up to the TV. Existing recorded shows (the 5 or so I recorded OTA in Montreal to confirm the box wasn't DOA) were still there and I was able to play one, which was reassuring. I didn't bother hooking up the antenna because I wanted to post the report on Montreal stations I posted upthread on Thursday night.
Friday evening I turned on the TV and there was a TiVo message "trying to find antenna signal" or something to that effect. No big deal I figured, obviously whatever Montreal channel the tuner was on didn't exist in Ottawa, and anyway there was no antenna attached. I just wanted to get to the menu to go on Standby or Shutdown or whatever it's called. But the box seemed to be frozen! I pressed the TiVo button, the up and down, change channels, etc., but nothing changed. I thought maybe it was locked in a (hypothetical) 15min-before-timeout search for a signal or something, but after 30min nothing had changed. I had to just pull the plug and hope that it will boot up again.
Hopefully this isn't normal behaviour, I wouldn't want this to happen just because I disconnected the antenna for service, for example. Is this a common occurrence or something I can get out of when it happens?
I may go ahead an activate Sunday or Monday, and if I do I'll report on Netflix functionality before I cancel NF again. Do I have the current TiVo software? It's 20.2.1.1-01-2-746 and it does have a menu item that tells me there are new NF and YT apps, though pressing Select just dumps me back to the main menu (perhaps because it's not activated?).
Thanks!

FunkyTown 2012-06-02, 10:03 PM My software version is: 20.2.1.1-01-2-748
andrela 2012-06-03, 08:47 AM Tivo may sometime freeze when no signal is present. This is a known bug.
It is safe to disconnect (pull the plug) the tivo at any time without damaging it. No need to go to stand by. Its operating system allows.it. In Standby, it still record, just dont display.
You have the latest software. -746 is the Premiere and -748 is the Premiere XL.
FunkyTown 2012-06-03, 08:55 AM LOL and it just so happens I was checking the XL for the software. I thought it would be the same as it used to be. Great catch Andrela.
awebber 2012-06-03, 02:16 PM Thank you both. I think I will go ahead and activate today (starting the 30-day return period) to check on the Netflix and some other functionality, though I'll probably cancel NF in a week, if I have access to other OTA programming.
I'm gong to need a splitter off the antenna since I have 2 old TVs (one Zinwell D/A converter, one TiVo). I see on Wikipedia that digital OTA seems to end at 806MHz; does that mean ancient splitters (up to 900MHz) would actually work? I may have thrown them all out with the RG59 when the 1000MHz ones came out for digital TV, and I've also see "up to 2.xGHz" splitters for a couple of bucks.

awebber 2012-06-03, 03:08 PM I went ahead and activated into my existing account. Says it will be a few hours before it's active and I guess that's right (even after forcing an update it still says my account is not set up and I have 1 day left). BTW it hasn't sent me a single nagging reminder to activated up to this point. Is it normally a few hours before it's active, or is that estimate overly pessimistic or optimistic?
[edit to add: it's now active as of 3:12pm after another forced update. So about 15min.]
Re: the Android TiVo app, when I go to the Play Store (Android Market) on my notebook and search on "TiVo" the first hit is the TiVo app. When I do that on my Telus phone there's no sign of the TiVo app.
I understand about geographic-based results (e.g. can't see TD Canada Trust app in US, can't see TD Bank app in Canada, though they work once you've got them installed) but both the notebook and the phone are on the same WiFi network in Canada right now! Is there a way to install the TiVo app onto the phone using my notebook, or a way to force the phone to see the TiVo app?
Thanks!

awebber 2012-06-03, 03:30 PM Sorry for the series of posts.
I wanted to see if I could pull a recording off my notebook (which had earlier been pulled off another TiVo). I have TiVo DT 2.8.2 (412369) and maybe a dozen shows in the Now Playing list. This TiVo has both sharing and downloads selected on tivo.com
From the TiVo, usually I can't see the notebook. If I pause and resume (or maybe exit and restart) the server on the notebook, the TiVo will sometimes see it. But then say there are no recordings in Now Playing, and then when I go back to My Shows, the notebook has disappeared again. I selected "Bonjour for Windows (preferred)" in Server Preferences. I switched to TiVo Beacon which restarted DT, when it came up it presented the notebook differently but again said there were no recordings. I have sharing set to automatic in DT, I'll try Full and a specific TiVo.
[another edit: after I changed Access Control to full, I was able to see and start downloading from the notebook. Also I notice the IP address for this TiVo is now listed correctly, vs. "unknown" earlier, so maybe it needed that IP address to know this was my network. Still no Netflix app.]
From the notebook I can see the TiVo and the 3 recording on it.
Is there something else I can do? I see there's a DT 2.8.3 but it implies it only adds DirecTV functionality.
Thanks!

awebber 2012-06-03, 04:04 PM If netflix still not working, go to settings->channel setting-> my video providers uncheck netflix and youtube, go back, go back in and re-check them.
Then retry netflix. It should work. If not, then it may be due that you have not subscribed the box and no Tivo account.
Still not working. From the main menu "New Netflix & YouTube Apps" I get 3 items that just tell me about each app (or parental controls) and then kicks me back. Under "Settings & Messages > Settings > Channels" I get a choice of Channel List, Channel Scan, Signal Strength - Antenna.
I do now have an activated (and subscribed) TiVo box on my existing TiVo account and I do have a Netflix account. The next step would be to generate a Netflix Activation Code on the TiVo, which I then enter on the NF site (I assume that's simply a way to associated this TiVo with this NF account) but at this point I'm not seeing a player.
Video downloading is activated on My TiVo website, maybe that takes more time to be working?
Tivo may sometime freeze when no signal is present. This is a known bug.
Thanks.
It is safe to disconnect (pull the plug) the tivo at any time without damaging it.
Even when it's recording, which is always? I would have assumed I had to stop the HD before pulling the plug, good to know I don't.
You have the latest software. -746 is the Premiere and -748 is the Premiere XL.
Thank you both for that. Now I have to wonder where NF went. :(
