: TiVos for HD OTA in Canada
Hey all,
Lurking.. but noticed the discussion of streaming TiVo content to your iPad or iPhone..
I've bought the full version of Tivo Desktop Plus. Now, when a show is recorded, I can have it automatically copied to my PC, where the software transcodes it for ipad and copies it to itunes. Your next sync (over wifi now, when you connect your ipad to charge) you will get the show automatically copied to your iPad or iPhone (if this is how you have iTunes setup).
I'm not doing it right now, but I tested it and it works great. My issue is I want the video transcoded to something better suitable for my Apple TV.. I only have 1 TiVo and being able to move shows to be watched from Apple TV would be handy.
It was a bit tricky buying the full version of TiVo Desktop since it wouldn't accept my billing address/Visa, but my AMEX worked.
El Gran Chico 2011-12-01, 11:46 AM Main, I use VideoRedo (instead of Tivo Desktop Plus, although I use plain ol' Tivo Desktop to move the show to my PC) to create files for my WDTV Live. Maybe it will good for Apple TV too?
You may also want to look at kmttg as well.
johnnyzee99 2011-12-01, 01:23 PM Is anyone able to get the Canadian version of Netflix to work with there Tivo? I mean with out using a VPN service or using a US Netflix account.
Thanks

I have a Series3 HD-XL with a Canadian Netflix account and it works. It didn't work when Netflix first was offered in Canada since the Tivo Netflix app requires shows be added to your queue on the Netflix side and that function wasn't available to Canadian Netflix users until recently. I was happy to see that it was working, but unfortunately, the picture quality through the Tivo isn't as good as through my Xbox360. So, I just use the Xbox app to stream Netflix.
johnnyzee99 2011-12-05, 02:14 PM The problem I'm having is there is no icon in the Browse TV & Movies section so I can activate Netflix. There is nothing there. If I go into that section and then go to the Neflix icon, I select it and nothing happens.
I also went into the settings, and selected the video providers, and that is empty also.
I have no idea where to go from here. Tivo gave me some suggestions and nothing worked out.
John:confused:
andrela 2011-12-05, 07:23 PM Johnnyzee99, Seems you are describing a Tivo Premiere. There are no Netflix nor Youtube on the Premiere in Canada.
If you have a TivoHD, you can only play the movies/shows that are on the Canadian AND US Netflix.
johnnyzee99 2011-12-06, 08:35 AM andrela,
Thanks for the info! I guess I just have to wait till it becomes available.
WalterP 2011-12-06, 02:28 PM I'm having a strange problem with the iPad app. Sometimes it works, but mostly it comes up with a message saying that it couldn't find any Tivo Premieres on my network. The iPad is connected (wireless) to the same router as my Tivos, and I don't have any problems connecting to the Tivos from my PC or Laptop, using the desktop software or kmttg, which emulates the iPad controls. The iPad doesn't have any problems connecting to the internet, directly or through my VPN. I called Tivo support but the CSR was stumped after going through all the scripts. Has anyone seen this before? BTW, still no new software on my Premiere or Premiere XL - They must be taking their time with the roll-out!
andrela 2011-12-06, 07:29 PM I suspect that you have 2 wireless networks. Tivos and pc hardwired in your vpn network ( not DNS) and your ipad wireless on same network?
I use my Ipad pretty much in the same configuration except for the kmttg that was causing major Tivo reboot.
The only time that I have that issue, is when I am not on the same network.
When this happens, check on your router status screens if tivos and ipad are connected, you could also check the Tivos network status.
As for the software roll out, still have only one tivo updated. Should be released shortly.
andrela 2011-12-06, 07:33 PM Johnnyzee99,
I waited 4 years. Got tired, got VPN.
WalterP 2011-12-07, 03:08 PM I have one network, with a single DHCP server and WiFi network. My VPN is set up on a second router (running DD-WRT with the WAN Disabled) that is connected to the primary network in gateway mode, as a device, with WiFi turned off. With this setup, and assigning the appropriate gateway address, any device (PS3, WDlive, etc) on my network can be connected to the internet via my local ISP (using the primary network router IP address as the gateway IP address), or via the VPN (by using the DD-WRT router IP address as the gateway IP address).
For instance, if I change my TiVo's gateway address to my primary router IP address, then I don't get access to Netflix but nothing else changes. My PCs are usually accessing the internet via my primary gateway but regardless of which router IP address is used (I use NetSetMan to switch between the gateway addresses) I can always connect to the Premiers over kmttg.
If I set up one TiVo as "Canadian", and another as "American", they can still see each other, and both access the same PCs running TiVo desktop server, and both simultaneously be seen by kmttg regardless of which gateway the PC is accessing the internet. Also, I can see all my devices on the primary router status screens, regardless of which gateway they are connecting through.
I even tried turning on the WiFi radio on the DD-WRT gateway, but I had the same problem - The iPad TiVo app connects intermittently to both Premiers, and then stops without any other changes occurring on my network. I'm stumped...
FunkyTown 2011-12-07, 09:39 PM I was having a ton of trouble trying to get the iPhone and iPad to work with the TiVo app. Yesterday I discovered something - enabling IGMP on my router seemed to fix the issues. Without that turned on it would sometimes work, but usually it would not work.
WalterP 2011-12-08, 11:52 PM I made a bunch of changes to my network settings, after reading up on various iPad connection issues. I don't know which change(s) fixed the problem, but now the iPad connects to both TiVos without errors. The iPad app is very comprehensive, and useful, especially if you're in the USA or use a VPN to connect to Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu Plus.
El Gran Chico 2011-12-28, 10:42 PM I've been having some weird problems with my channel lineups since I've been on version 14.9. I've gotten a message that says I have a problem with my guide data and need to run Guided Setup again. But when I run Guided Setup, my OTA channels get added in a 2nd time but only one version works, so I needed to de-program the bad ones. :o
I got sick of seeing the bad channels in my lineup so I switched to another nearby postal code (which fortunately had all the OTA channels I get) and that cleaned up my channel lineup.
FunkyTown 2011-12-28, 10:49 PM I live in the Ottawa area and noticed 2 weeks ago that I had 2 channel 6.1s. That's Global TV here in this region. The first one works, but the second one doesn't. However, when I go to the antenna signal strength screen in TiVo, both 6.1 channels register the same strength. It's really strange. I haven't complained to TiVo since there's a way around it. Also, I'm scared that TiVo might remove both channel 6.1's.
WalterP 2012-01-06, 02:54 PM It looks like a new release (20.xx) has started rolling out to the Premiere line of products, just in time for CES. This one is supposed to "officially" enable streaming between Premiere boxes, and offers new search capabilities (now enabled for Hulu Plus in the same way as for Netflix). I'm seeing just as many green circles with the current "new" version 14.9, so hopefully this "new new" software will make an improvement.
Tivo has also released version 1.5 of their Tivo application for Android 2.2 and above. Does anyone have any tips on how this can be loaded into a Canadian Android smartphone? I can see it in the market when I'm using my USA VPN, but it doesn't want to install on my Fido Nexus S...
FunkyTown 2012-01-08, 01:06 AM My bedroom TiVo premiere is now on version 20.2-01-2-746. The living room is still on 14.9. I don't see any streaming functionality yet. It's possible that both machines need to be on version 20. The menus are a bit different when watching shows. They give more info at a glance such as what's on next. The old SD menus are still in SD. Hulu Plus, Netflix, and YouTube is showing up on the My Shows screen now - but they give an error message when you select them from a Canadian IP.
I just noticed the upgrade tonight so haven't had time to really use it yet. I'll report any bugs or issues.
andrela 2012-01-08, 01:09 PM This new version has major changes and most of the HDUI has been updated to HD. Multi Room Streaming will be enabled once all premieres are updated by the end of the month. According to Margret, VP of design at Tivo, this is the fondation of many changes to come in 2012 including changes to apps.
FunkyTown 2012-01-08, 01:27 PM Thanks Andrela. I haven't had any lock ups or slow downs yet. The To Do List is still in SD and looks the same as before. Season Pass Manager is the same. The settings screen is the same. All still SD.
What happens when I change channels or select a show to play is different. There is a menu similar to the INFO menu but it's at the bottom of the screen. The font is different - I find it easy to read. The box shows the name of the show, and what channel you are on or recorded the show from. It shows what's on that channel next. If you press the INFO button the older info menu appears, but the fonts and design is the nice new one. Still blue background with the TiVo cartoon in the corner.
El Gran Chico 2012-01-09, 06:12 PM The To Do List is still in SD and looks the same as before. Season Pass Manager is the same. The settings screen is the same.
Mine appear all different, unless it's some sort of optical illusion. My software version now shows as 20.2-01-2-746. I haven't had too much time to check very much but so far it looks and feels much better than before (eg. response times).
