Jase88 2009-06-21, 11:37 PM @fireman13: The first step is to educate yourself. I recommend that you (like all of us) do a lot of reading around this site. Start with Stampeder's FAQ, etc. Also check out hdtvprimer.com, which offers great comparisons of antenna, and explains many of the effects, issues, and other required knowledge with regards to OTA.
The fun part is becoming knowledgeable, then sharing your knowledge with others.
Just remember that OTA isn't as complicated or costly as it initially seems.
gohabsgo2 2009-06-22, 09:45 AM I'm on Everwood Run near the top, in case that helps you to compare positions. Thanks for the information, Phil. I found a pretty good website (http://www.dennysantennaservice.com/TV_Antenna_system_Installation_.html) that showed how to do the eavemount by laying on the roof so I decided to take on the installation myself and used my 24' ladder from my deck to get upp to the roof. I bought 'ladder standoffs' which really added some stability when my ladder was extended to its maximum length. I put the standoffs in the 2nd and 3rd rung holes but could have used 1st and 2nd. The job is not complete yet, though, I still have a few trips up there to make.
So far, I have installed the eave mount and rotor pole and strung the rotor wire through a vent to my attic and fished through a wall to my upstairs bedroom where the rotor controller will live. I think this was the most difficult part of the job. I expect the next part to be a little
easier.
Next is the rotor, antenna, preamp and stringing the ground wire down one wall and the cable down the opposite corner where it will enter the basement
distribution point (after going through a grounding block).
My location, is slightly higher, according to Bing.com 3D maps. My altitude is 1044ft vs your 1019. Hopefully my results will match yours.

peano 2009-06-24, 09:46 AM I read about some folks who have tried adding one extra boom section of directors to their XG91 with good results.
I tried it and it certainly does help. My problem station is WUTV with occasional WGRZ issues. WGRZ is now rock solid and WUTV is better even with my antenna not yet at full height.
All stations do no fluctuate nearly as much now. Before, one might go to 68 to 55 to 0 and back up to 70 and so on.
As a bonus, I now get CFTO both OMNIs and CITY with it pointed at Buffalo.
I am hoping the Kitztech amp I have on order will be the final piece of my OTA puzzle.
kooguy 2009-06-24, 10:21 AM Just wondering how you would able to add an extra boom section to your 91XG? Any pictures to share? I'm very impress with that 91XG antenna. May want to try it out from my location one day.
peano 2009-06-24, 10:30 AM The XG91 boom comes in 3 sections in the box. I bought 2 so I had extra sections. (Apparently Antennas Direct will send you an extra section if you ask).
It connects with two wing nuts. Keep in mind it is over 10 feet long with the extra section.

hamid14 2009-06-24, 11:16 AM Hi everyone! I have an old analog tv and am looking into OTA. I live in cambridge, ontario. I am going to buy an indoor antenna, and do I need a digital converter box or can I still get at least 20 channels without it?
stampeder 2009-06-24, 11:23 AM Hi hamid14, I've moved your post into this thread covering your area, so just use the Search This Thread tool to the upper right beside Thread Tools and put in Cambridge as your search term so you can see how others have done and compare. :)
You will need a converter box for that TV, and you will need an outdoor antenna for getting any DTV stations in Cambridge.
Also please read these links first so that you will understand the concepts and terminology: ----------------------->
gohabsgo2 2009-06-24, 11:27 AM With an indoor antenna, it will be very doubtful you will pick up 20 channels unless you have an ideal high elevation location. You can check tvfool.com and punch in your postal code to get an idea of what will be available to you. The farther out the stations are, the more likely you will need an antenna with higher gain and best possible antenna location, ie up high, outside. There is a lot of information in these forums for you to read to help you decide what to do, buy and maximize your OTA reception results.

So I take it the original 3 sections means the whole length is 91" (abt 8'), hence it is called 91XG. With the added section (if I have it from Antenna Direct), the length will be over 10'.
By the way, that picture looks very cool...Most of my neighbours have those big/long Yagis on their roof. I may need something to join the crowd.
Thanks.
stampeder 2009-06-24, 12:05 PM peano, given your deepest fringe requirements you might want to think about stacking 2 91XGs as long as they are 25" (one full Channel 14 wavelength) apart for a boost of about 2.5dB, but aiming them would be a real endeavour and you would not want them on a rotor. You'd want to spend time to peak them "just right" and then lock them into place after you've experimented with moving the lower one up and down by about an eighth of an inch each time to get the separation perfect! :D
kooguy, if you're thinking of using one (or two!) in Ajax you'd want it locked at your preferred target, and then use a big bowtie reflector for DXing and/or rotor use.
hamid14 2009-06-24, 08:37 PM What antenna should I use? I am thinking of buying a good outdoor antenna for about 40-50 dollars. I live in a bungalow, which is not very high, so I'll try to put the antenna on the roof. Also, what is the best dtv converter that is at a affordable price? Thanks in advance.

Check out other reports from Cambridge
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/search.php?searchid=3816846
then go to the tvfool website and type in your address for info on the channels you can receive. Then go to the antenna selection chart in this website.
But.......before you do any of that,as Stamp[eder suggested ,check out the FAQ's. There is a wealth of information there.
burden 2009-06-24, 10:36 PM Question - we have a cottage on Lake Huron, on Bruce Road 13 between Southampton and Sauble Beach.
Brought up a Panasonic 42"" with ATSC tuner built in, and did a scan, and was shocked to pick up a HD channel over in Michigan (can't recall which one, as wrote it down on a piece of paper which is at the cottage), it was at night so i assume i was getting some of the Weather Effects, DXing, Tropospheric Skip ..., and it was hit and miss, but all i did was connect the cable that was connected to the current antenna that is installed
Anyone up in that area able to get anything, i have CM 4228 at home that i was thinking of bringing up and trying out
I'll try and post a pic of the antenna that is currently installed

The "dish" below the antenna is for internet access (which we just got installed !!!)
stampeder 2009-06-24, 10:37 PM Impressive! I hope you find that slip of paper with the station ID. :)
burden 2009-06-24, 10:57 PM I believe the station was the ABC one WJRT, here is a quick snap shot

yea, i was shocked that it found an HD station, we can't even get a CBC analog station clear ...
hamid14 2009-06-25, 10:29 PM I made an indoor- antenna simliar to the coat hanger antenna on youtube and connected it to my television set, which is analog. I checked out tvfool.com and it said i would be able to get channels 13, 6, 56, 28, 61, 39 easily. The problem is, i only get channel 13 clearly, channel 6 fuzzy and the other channels dont even show! I am going to try my antenna outside tomorrow. Also, i picked analog channels on tvfool.com, I am not buying a digital converter. I just want at LEAST 5-6 channels.
I made a tiny loop antenna with a small copper wire attached to one end of the coaxial cable and the other end of the coaxial cable in my tv. I twisted the copper wire into a circle and was able to get channel 13 clear, channel 6 clear, ABC channel 31 sort of clear and some other channels somewhat clear.
gohabsgo2 2009-06-26, 10:30 AM Got some swell reception last night and this morning. I turned my cm4228hd to about 120 deg. and pulled in 15 digital channels. This is with my antenna still sitting in the bedroom! I can't wait to get it on the roof with rotor installed. I do have a cm7777 attached to the antenna also.
Kind of weird is I picked up CBC 5.1 from CN tower from this direction. Usually I need to point at about 80 deg to pick up the CN tower.
Larry
stampeder 2009-06-26, 12:43 PM Let's hope that the reception is still satisfactory in the autumn. ;)
hsplrguy 2009-06-26, 04:37 PM hamid14 there are 2 stores in Guelph I suggest you try for Channel Master Antennas and amplifiers either Neutron or Wintronic Computers. Channel 31 is CityTV's repeater from Woodstock. If you buy channel master stuff and put it up outside you will be surprised at what you will get but you need to get a digital to analog convertor also here in Cambridge if you want to watch any USA programming.
hamid14 2009-06-28, 12:04 PM Thanks for the info, hsplrguy! I will look into buying a channel master antenna! I also have a friend in the USA, who is ordering two digital converter box coupons for me, but I do not know which one to buy?
