hi everyone I was thinking of subscribing to telus tv soon and have heard some rumours about recording the tv stream through an ethernet port on the stb to the computer using vlc player?
If anyone can confirm this for me please do tell ^^.
Oh and if it is so can any one give me directions on using this method? cheers everyone happy thanksgiving!!:p:)

essentially you'd need to have a hub or switch between your gateway and the STB
then plug the STB and your PC into the switch/hub
using wireshark (or whatever packetsniffer you're familiar with) capture packets while you're watching a particular channel, and note the multicast channel and port that channel uses
then stick those values into VLC and you should see the channel displayed
now just have VLC dump the stream to a file
it's easy, but it's not something you're going to be able to set up to record stuff on demand (well, not unless you're very good programming, and if you are, send me a PM and we can work together ;) )
