: Almost ready to mud - drywall corners.

After taken 6 months off from my HT reno, I'm almost ready to start mudding in about a week.

I've done drywall repairs in the past, but have never used corner bead before. Anyone have any tips?

I think I prefer the stick on type, or using the plastic / paper backed beads that I can spray adhesive on top. The old fashion metal corner bead isn't going to work for me as I have no wood to nail it to, as I have double layer 5/8" drywall on the ceiling with sound clips and hat channeling, and my walls are double layer 1/2" drywall.

I've searched the net, and found a company 'Strait-flex' that makes a plastic corner bead. It appears to come in rolls. Has anyone used it? My drywall hanging is decent, but would likely go with the wider beads to 'fix' some errors.

I am using fibreglass tape on the flat and tapered seams, with Sheetrock 90 for the 1st coat.

Thanks,
Peter

I like the newer rounded corner bead for my walls, and Sheetrock 90 for all my mudding. Little cleanup, goes on great, and dries in the right amount of time.

Hi Wayne,

Can u thin the Sheetrock 90 more when mixing? I've only used a few batches of it, and made it 3 parts powder, and 1 part water.... Wondering if i could add another 5-10% water to it to make it creamier.....

Hey Peter,
unfortunately we've never measured the ratio's at all. Ooh, about 15 years ago a professional drywaller was doing work at our place and that's what he used. He told us to just mix it to the consistency of oatmeal after pouring in a crap load into a plastic bucket. So we watched him, and been doing it that way ever since.

We have made it both thicker and thinner. The thicker it is, the thicker the coat. The thinner we made it, the thinner the coat, for say final coat, etc. What we really liked is that it seems to shrink up much less, with a lot less sanding and dust afterwards.

We have used the premade cardboard 10 or 20 pounds cardboard premixed stuff from GNC I think (Home Depot), but didn't like nearly as much. Also used the Sheetrock 60, but that just dries waaaaaaay too fast for our speed.

You might like to look into the newer drywall paste which makes very little dust. Of course, it came out right after I was done doing the mudding....:o

Home Depot has it.
