: Canadian Tire charged an Eco Fee?
The Watcher 2008-09-19, 01:44 PM Was at Canadian Tire on Wednesday the eighteenth of September and bought oil on sale. When I got home I noticed a 24 cent ecofee on my bill. What is this fee and why am I paying tax on this fee? I have never seen this before. Their was no mention of this fee in the flyer.
Does anyone know who put this fee in, and where is the money going?
DLPAddict 2008-09-19, 03:20 PM Welcome to the "Green S****"
Stuawardship Ontario came up with the Green Tax ;)
On July 1 2008 every content of paint, oil, coolant, oil filter, spray paint, tank of propane, thinner etc..etc.... will be taxed a few penny to a few dollars.
To help recycling....the empties...... blah blah blah!
The catch is you won't see any more recycling facility any time soon
This is another scam to get more TAX out of our pocket and make the Green
feel good about it.
I work in the autoparts business and we where warn only 2 weeks before
the TAX scheme was implemented or force down our throats
It took me over 20 min. to find there web site and the list
Hey....it isn't too bad only a few penny...more
I've been sarcastic........ this scam P*** me off like you can't believe we already pay for some eco fee and now this
wait for the Electronic/Electrical Eco scam (fees) to empty our pocket just a little bit more.
They impose all kind of scheme TAX, FEES,Green Shift etc..... to save the planet ?!
They (Greenie,Goracle,David I will put you in prison Suzuki) need to watch the late George Carlin video about
saving the planet.
I bought some acrylic driveway sealer a few weeks ago from Home Hardware and there was a tax of something like $1.79 per container. Driveway Robbery!
newantenna 2008-11-10, 03:02 PM I was charged this fee yesterday when I bought an oil filter and oil at Canadian Tire. Neither the cashier in the store or Canadian Tire Customer Relations had any idea what it is other than calling it a Government Tax.
So I called the Ministry of the Environment and they told me it was Stewardship Canada which is a private company associated with Waste Diversion Ontario. According to a very pleasant lady there, this is a charge mandated by Government legislation on July 1st, 2008 on certain products such as oil, oil filters, paints, etc. She says it will pay for more waste drop-off depots and environment days where hazardous waste is picked up, etc.
Sounds like another tax rip-off to me, especially when Toronto has just increased its garbage charges and property taxes.
I'm not sure, but perhaps the following site will answer your questions:
http://www.stewardshipontario.ca/mhsw/retail/retailers.html
DLPAddict 2008-11-20, 10:37 AM Name only one eco-fee who really did or does something for the environment
As a example in Quebec for the past few years they impose a tax of $5.00 on each tire you buy but they still piling up use tire in the field
The new eco-fee will end up the same way here in Ontario.
Like I said before a few penny here a few dime........Ka-Ching!!!
This is only a feel good tax like so many others now.
TECHNOKID 2008-11-20, 01:27 PM As a example in Quebec for the past few years they impose a tax of $5.00 on each tire you buy but they still piling up use tire in the field
I believe the amount is greater now. This has been the new way for government to impose taxes on Canadians (provincially & federally wise) however, this is simply a jsutification for rip off as the money doesn't seem to be involved in any ways in to solving any environment pollution problems! Has anyone got anything solid proving otherwise? IE: the money paid for the tires, is on the new tires NOT the old ones, no body knows or care where the tires go. I have approximately 10 on my property as I never knew what to do with them, never ever wanted to put them on the curb.
Cheers!
René
ldn_handyman 2009-06-12, 03:41 PM I too just made a purchase at Canadian Tire (transmission fluid). I get home and notice the so-called Ecofee. I called as I thought I was charged for a bag when I did not take one. However the abrupt lady on the line tells me that this is a government tax for disposal. "Of what?" I asked. "The product" she answered. I told her that I've never seen this before and she said that not all retailers disclose the fee.
Now hold on a sec. Aren't I already paying for recycling at the curb and at the specialty depots? For now, I am going to refuse to buy anything further at CTC, and I have sent off at note to their customer service declaring that not only is this a rip off, but their store clerks are grossly misinformed in telling folks like me that they just collect the monies and send it off to the government.
I “Googled” Ecofee and the first respondent is some animal rights thing in the USA. Then the Digital Forum was next. I see no governmental input there.
This surely sounds like a grab to me. Is it any wonder that while wages steadily rise since the 70's, the average disposable income plummets at a much higher rate?
OH.. And by the way.... I have since gone to the STEWARDSHIP site and they clearly state that "THIS IS NOT A TAX".. Please see: http://www.stewardshipontario.ca/mhsw/faqs/faqs.html#consum4
Ya know??? the more I get into this.. the more angry I'm getting.
This will definately be an issue that I will raise on our next election.
DLPAddict 2009-06-12, 04:07 PM Don't forget since April 1 2009 in Ontario any electronic component/parts
you buy , you will be charge an Eco TAX to save the planet.
Like the Eco TAX you just paid at CTC who was shoved down our throat with little warning by next September you're gonna get hit in the gonnads by another Eco TAX when you purchase new tires.
Every government are using the environment to justify new taxes no matter what even if will do little for the environment like I said in a previous post look what Quebec did with their own tire tax.
July 1 2008 Eco TAX on every chemicals sold in Ontario
April 1 2009 Eco TAX on electronics equipment or parts
June 1 2009 Plastic bag TAX in the GTA but some store are extending
the scam across the country.
Coming this September a new Eco TAX on tires.
And many more TAXES to come.........
A lot of people a wearing Greeny glasses
Don't get me wrong I'm all in for recycling and use less and waste less
But why the money I mean the TAX goes to some obscure Eco-fund ( seen at Ro-Na store to justify the plastic bag grab) to save the planet we never heard of or see any concrete result in near futur??
ScaryBob 2009-06-15, 01:53 AM I've been paying disposal/recycling fees for drained oil and other fluids for years. Now they want to double dip and charge at point of sale as well?
Coming this September a new Eco TAX on tires.
There is already a disposal/recycling fee on tires. It didn't make any difference to the way tires are handled either. Is this another one that won't do anything but raise prices?
The only way I see these fees as justifiable is if they go directly back into local recycling programs. As if that is going to happen.
It makes more sense to charge directly for disposal than to pay for it through regular taxes.
The current system can be considered "socialized waste disposal" (applies to hazardous and non-hazardous) - you pay regardless of how much waste you produce.
That being said, the government should give a small tax cut somewhere else to compensate - ensuring that the waste actually gets recycled is also an issue.
Name only one eco-fee who really did or does something for the environment
If there's a cheaper, practical, and viable alternative (ex: re-useable bags)*, as much as people hate them, fees do work. Right now we're purchasing things without thinking about the life cycle costs. (Direct and indirect)
*If not it's just another tax
dosborne 2009-06-16, 09:41 AM April 1 2009 Eco TAX on electronics equipment or parts
June 1 2009 Plastic bag TAX in the GTA but some store are extending
the scam across the country.
I bought a printer online from Dell. The eco fee was over 10% of the cost (printer = $44 and the eco fee was over $5).
In this case though, they take back all used cartridges and apparently cover the shipping although I haven't looked to hard at the details.
Here in Ottawa, not sure about other areas, Loblaws has been charging for plastic bags for a few weeks now. Most retailers offer a discount if you don't need them, but Loblaws charges for them instead.
DLPAddict 2009-06-16, 03:07 PM Ro-Na hardware store charge for them without discount.
Metro (formely Dominion ) charge for it without discount even in Quebec now.
Loblaws who went spineless and started the whole thing when Commrad Miller start threatening all the businesses who where using the plastic bag in Toronto.
Last fall when Commrad Miller decided he needs to save the planet and become Captain planet, an article in the paper ( The Sun or The Star can't remember) calculated the amount of the TAX will around $44 000 000 per year :o
I don't remember if it was for Loblaws only or from all the store in Toronto.
Still nobody knows where ALL that money (TAX) will go!!
Still nobody knows where ALL that money (TAX) will go!!
Actually that money goes directly to the retailers (not a tax) - look it up if you don't believe me.
DJDiggler 2009-06-17, 12:17 AM IE: the money paid for the tires, is on the new tires NOT the old ones, no body knows or care where the tires go. I have approximately 10 on my property as I never knew what to do with them, never ever wanted to put them on the curb.
The tire tax is put to good use, (in alberta anyway)... You should just be able to take old tires to any tire shop and they will dispose of them, (this is what the money goes to), they are taken in huge bins and recycled into many different products (http://www.albertarecycling.ca/BasicContent.aspx?id=334&ekmensel=a681a8bf_8_24_334_5).
These fees are a pain, but I'd definitely like to see more recycling of products. I think a refundable deposit is the way to go. Getting money back, (even though it was in the first place ;) ), for doing something right is a great thing!
Imagine getting $10 back for that old TV or computer, a couple bucks for droping off a bunch of dirty oil... It would definitely push more people to recycling.
DLPAddict 2009-06-17, 02:12 PM DJDiggler your right!
Like getting money back from your empties.
That would work better than TAXING us to death!!
At least people would feel they're doing something right.
Instead of getting ripped of buy businesses who pocket the money in the name of saving the planet
DLPAddict 2009-06-17, 02:35 PM txvActually that money goes directly to the retailers (not a tax) - look it up if you don't believe me.
Sadly you're right :(
The Watcher 2009-06-17, 10:34 PM Can anyone tell me why am I paying TAX on the ECO-FEE. Does not sound right. If we have to pay it, it should be after tax not before. Is this practice legal. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
DLPAddict 2009-06-18, 09:36 AM The Watcher you didn't know!? ;)
How do you think they pay for the eHealth fiasco !! ;)
The government always need our money and this is for our own good !
We have an expression in french about the government wanting more TAX
it's hard to translate : "Ont veux votre bien...et ont va l'avoir "
MarcP 2009-06-18, 09:56 AM We want what's best for you.... And we will have it! ;)
