...from the center of the disc to the outside edge NOT around the disc in a circle.

Just sayin'.

How about cleaning the disc. I've had this problem happen to me both on a HD-DVD player & the Samsung Combo Player. You put the disc in and either some of it plays or zip. Nada. The nada is more often on the Samsung combo player in my case. What I've done in the past, and it seems to work is to wipe down the disc.

I'll wet a tissue, then wipe the disc. Then wipe the disc with a dry tissue to remove all the water on the disc. And it works. I get the feeling that there might be residue from the manufacturing process that remains on the discs. The Blue lasers seem very sensitive to fingerprints and other un-noticable material to the human eye.

I've had this problem with a least half a dozen HD-DVD discs. And in the end, problem solved. Movie enjoyed.
Thanks for this. I was could not get my nice new BSG Season 1 HD DVD to load. 2 Kleenex later everything worked fine.

This is very bad and will get really bad IMO.

Players finally coming down around the 200 mark, esp the Sony 300 and Sammy's and now this happens.

What happened the quality control group for BD that is suppose to make sure movies work on all players?

Maybe this explains why HD-DVD prices never hit rock bottom. At least they play! Plus, they have the same PQ, and about the same AQ.

Looks like Paramount is recalling all Ironman BDs... got this from hdaddicts forum

We have found that a portion of the Blu-ray disc for Iron Man may not play on certain blu-ray set top players due to differences in manufacturers’ specs.

To ensure the consumer received the best possible blu-ray experience, Paramount has decided to replace the current Iron Man blu-ray product.

The current blu ray sku in your system will replaced with a new number. Your head office will ensure that the product ordered for you customers will be re shipped to your branch.

At this point in time, I cannot confirm the exact delivery date for your product.

^ Just to add to that, Paramount changed the SKU of the original Iron Man BD. They have said that all copies available *on street date* will be fine, it has a different SKU. It's people who got copies before street date that have the defective version. Some stores have had the Iron Man BD for weeks, and I guess have been selling them (not that unusual). I know Best Buy is/was a major source.

Iron Man Blu-ray Recalled; Possibly Delayed

Blu-ray.com is reporting that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Iron Man' has been recalled. A few weeks back, some of those receiving review copies reported trouble playing the disc in their Blu-ray players. Apparently, there is an authoring problem with the disc, and distributors have been issued direction to send back all product.

I wonder if they will also cure the issue that causes decoderes to switch to night/compression mode .

^ Isn't that mostly a PS3 problem? For whatever (IMO stupid) reason, Sony decided to enable the audio compression mode by default in the PS3 settings. IOW, if the appropriate flag was on the BD, the audio would be slightly compressed *unless you turned the PS3 setting off first*.

Frankly, I think the people who got early copies of IM by whatever means and brought up this "problem" a while back, should be embarassed they didn't adjust the PS3 setting to ensure ANY automatic compression mode is turned off. And should have done this as soon as they got the PS3. Why wouldn't you do that if you presume to be so fussy about sound quality and can hear 4dB of compression so readily? It's quite clear this setting can/may/will cause audio compression. I call this pilot error, don't blame the "plane" or the "fuel"...

Or maybe it's just me? I'm picky about sound quality. I go through all AVR/source settings to make sure any compression settings are OFF...it's not very difficult, the settings are obvious, but I do admit there are more of them than ever these days considering how varied digital sources are and how many processing options there are.

I think most/all reputable BD players have the means to disable this compression flag. I would hope (but don't know) the default would be for the flag to be off in most cases. That is usually true for things like "night mode" and "LFE volume" compression flags in AVRs, and has been so in all my DVD players' compression flags but I haven't looked at that many BD players.

Yeah I've got my replacement disc now from Paramount, they just sent the feature disc inside of a slim case with a letter basically apologizing. Works fine in my father's BD-P1500 player.

As far as the sound issues, we've always had our compression set to off, so it wasn't an issue for me.

I went and looked at the PS3 "compression thing" again last night. Haven't looked at the settings since I installed 2.42, when they added a couple new things. Anyway, I guess I could see how many people might have set the flag to "automatic" or on as Sony gives a rather poor description of exactly what it does. It is quite possible (even reasonable) to interpret the setting as boosting dialog, rather than compressing the "rest of the sound", unless you know about the details. Still...people who caused such an internet fuss (not that hard to do I guess...) over audio, you'd think they'd naturally set anything with the whiff of compression or level manipulation to off. In Sony's defense, I guess I need to look at the default setting as being more appropriate for games, which is the main intended PS3 use. Anyway, those who mostly use the PS3 for BD are forewarned, it's not just Iron Man that uses or will use this flag.

Sounds like a must-get BD from the numerous reviews now up.

Just incase you have not heard.......There may be a problem/ recall for Iron Man!! Here is the link.

"In true super-hero style - Iron Man might have narrowly avoided a near disaster. No, it wasn’t an explosive missile from his arch-nemesis in the film, Iron Monger played by Jeff Bridges. Instead it was something that could have been devastating for the film’s Blu-ray release and possibly delivered a spot of damage to the Blu-ray format overall."

Just got my FutureShop exclusive steelbook Ironman BD today. Will find out if there are hiccups. I'm guessing it'll be ok on PS3 anyhow. ;)

Just picked up the FutureShop exclusive steelbook Ironman BD and it works on Samsung 1400. The upc codes are different than those reported elsewhere, so it looks like the Futureshop version wasn't affected.

Sorry, but I've had at least a couple HD-DVD's that wouldn't play in my HD-D3, and it wasn't a firmware issue. Sounds identical to this Iron Man fiasco.

What about all that disc boiling nonsense? Atleast this got recalled/replaced before the street date.

Same AQ? Dont make me laugh.

My Steelbook copy of Ironman won't play on my 60Gig PS3 , it just sits at a pulsing blue orb on the screen.

I've rebooted the PS3, cleaned the disc and cried for the past 1/2 hour trying to get it to work.

disconnect your player or ps3 from the internet. i did that then ejected and re insert the disc and it loaded fine. think it has a problem with the bd-live stuff. but without the internet it just bypasses all that.

I love you. ;)

It worked.

That's pretty stupid though if you ask me.

What's so funny. The Dolby True HD soundtrack on Batman Begins on HD DVD is somehow inferior to the Dolby True HD soundtrack on the Blu Ray?
