: Rogers UI (more specifically, the guide)
rogers are all over the place and some times the same HD channel appears in 2 or 3 different places.Rogers have all the HD channels from 500-545. They are remapped in several places to be in "themes" For example the digital channels are sorted into categories like sports, women, kids, news, movies, timeshifting, music, etc.
A few things that the SA8300HD does that the 92XX doesn't.
- have a passthrough mode for formats so that 480i, 720P and 1080i can go directly to the TV usually resulting in better PQ and allowing the TV to stretch (good for plasmas and CRTs).
- external SATA drive that works. ;)
- firewire connection
- Etc.
Each provider has pluses and minuses, that's why they exist.
TKG26 2008-09-14, 04:30 PM Thanks. Its disappointing but im not bitter its a choice i could not control. When my home is ready a dish will be going on it, unless rogers releases new hardware by then ;)
It's the firmware, especially the IPG that needs updating. I wish the IPG and search were better too, but the pluses of Rogers (service, bundling) outweigh the minuses (for me). If I were outside the Rogers area, it would be a no brainer to go to Bell.
You will have to use Zap2it (on a PC) for your searching needs, and be aware of the "Inconsistent Program Titles" problem (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=18287) when using any of the record "all episodes" options.
TKG26 2008-09-15, 09:08 PM thanks jlet, but zap2it has nothing to do with searching for shows on that pvr. althoug its a good resourse for finding out when shows should be on. The power of the search feature on the bell system is simply amazing. Many times shows will bounce around the primetime line up, one night on friday then next week on thursday, with BEV it will catch the changes, not just lock into a time slot or one single channel.
anyway thanks for the info people...
TKG26, you will quickly discover the Rogers IPG single character search feature is annoying and close to useless. That is why I suggested Zap2it. I use the IPG only to setup all my "one episode" recordings and avoid the "all episodes" options to dodge the "Inconsistent Program Titles" problem. The "one episode" option will record even if the IPG title changes drastically. It will record using the initial title name.
MCIBUS 2008-09-25, 07:47 PM Rogers IPG has to be one of the worst I've ever seen. I have had SC & BEV IPGs along with Rogers at the sametime so I know what the difference between the three are. Putting ' Firmware as side and what each can do Rogers is pethic PLAN & SIMPLE!!
They repeat channels way to many times
Do we really need to have Rogers ON Demand show up 7+ times in the guide? Does Rogers think subs are really that stupid and lazy they can't turn to channel 100?
The line up is totally mixed up.
Noow grant you I understand certain "local" channels vary from region to region and the ABC,NBC,CBS,FOX,PBS eastern feeds(at least in Ontario, not sure about the Maritimes) I do believe are ether Detroit or Buffalo(at least in Ottawa & Toronto respectively, not sure about of Rogers locations in Otario) and the western feeds are seattle, putting that aside 99% of the other channels are available to all Rogers subs in Ontaerio with the exception of Leafs TV & Sens PPV PPV Page, but that has more to do with NHL Team Rights then Rogers so there's not much Rogers can do abpout that, and Shop TV & Pluse 24 which basically are only in the GTA & cities close to Toronto London? I think but not sure anbout that?
But either then that the line up is more or les the same.
The way they have there channels set up is no0t bad, but neds to be re-alined.
Exam[le their ethhic line up stars at 571 and runs all the way to 649 there are only two spots left 574 & 643 left for ethnic channels. then it goes to french ones from 650 to 699.
If I where in charge of setting up Rogers line up I would put it like this.
Analog
2-70 what you have presently in your local set up.
Digital
2-70 same as analog but in digital
71-119 French Channels-specialty-SD & HD
120-298 english channels-speacilty & Timeshiifting-SD(no channels from 2-70 put in line up)
299 Rogers How To Channel
300 Rogewrs On demand
301-389 Movies/PPV/Adult/On Demand services ie howard, Food etc(excluding Sports)
390-399 Religous
400 Sports Preview View Channel
401-499 SD & HD Sports Channels-PPV Sports Packages,Sports on Demand-ie-NFL,WWE.
500-599 HD channels-english-network & english Speacilty.
600-699 Ethnic
700-989 Muisic- Speacilty,Galaxy(45 the way it should be), Max Trax(all of them that are truely available), Radio(all that Rogers decides to carries to be shown in all regions, not just a few in srelected areas) ,Sirus oe X FM(which ever Rogers decides to carry or both)
990-997 Test channels
998,999 Those Lobby watch channels.
Thats how I would do the line up.
As for the IPG itself I'm not that techniocal in that area so not sure what cann really be donne but I would try and maje the Pitcure in Guide fit properly so it doesn't cutr off part of pitcure ie cuts off subtilles if movie is foriegn.
Info on program proper and more info using page up/down feature so yo can scro;; to get more info about movioe or program.
having a LetterBox icon something like [] this, DD 5.1 Dolby icon, HD icon, subtittles icon
Interactive features(like BEV receivers)
Any other things or comments?
TOM :)

Not much any of us can do about it though.
As mentioned above, nothing new here and has been discussed many times. I've moved your post into this thread which has similar comments. Please read the following post for some of the explanations of why the channel layout is the way it is and things that Rogers does better.

MCIBUS 2008-09-26, 10:30 AM I stil think it a waste of have the same channel repeat itself 2 or 3 times.
As for line up set up like I said in my pervous post thats how I would sety up the line up.
I stil think it a waste of have the same channel repeat itself 2 or 3 times. As an FYI, it's not wasting bandwidth since the channels are simply remapped to different locations on the "dial". It appears that more threads have been merged (not by me). I'll modify my previous post.
(Just so you know, the forum has a spell checker if you right click in your post while composing in most browsers.)
MCIBUS 2008-09-26, 04:12 PM Thanks
I should use it. The reason for so many spelling errors is I have a visual disability. Tunnel Glaucoma.
I know its re-mapping but I still think is a waste to have the channel repeat itself so many times.
Grant you thats just my view on it though, your untiled to yours 57.
electric 2008-11-06, 10:08 PM Has anyone heard of plans to update the Rogers' IPG interface? It hasn't changed in years and is much less graphically elegant than Bell's. A sales guy at a Rogers outlet said he had heard that they were looking at updating it in January 09. I'm currently on Bell and know I can get the same package cheaper with Rogers but am hesitant to do so and go back to their 90s style interface.
actng 2008-11-11, 01:59 AM 90s?? windows.exe in DOS 3.1 had a better interface!
it pisses me off how u can't sort by channel. On one page, show me all the shows for the entire day for one channel.
TKG26 2008-11-11, 07:17 AM I'd pay extra for a proper IPG... LOL im totally fustrated with this box! :)
Wayne 2008-11-11, 10:00 AM Is this due to the limitations of the box (in Ontario the SA3200, 3250HD, 4250HD, 8000, 8300HD) or is there a better guide available for this hardware that is used in other geographies?
It is not a hardware limitation. A different IPG has been demonstrated and was the subject of a thread a while back.
It is likely though that a new IPG, with more features, would take more of the STB resources, therefore making it slow. (Shaw had significant problems with their STBs slowing down when they changed the number of days that the IPG went for)
NCRGuy 2008-11-12, 08:33 AM I understand that Rogers has launched a new IPG in Atlantic Canada. Are there any plans to do the same in Ontario and, if so, when?
windows7 2008-11-12, 08:53 AM I noticed all the STBs in my house rebooted at 6:16AM... so here's hoping. *fingers crossed*
