: Rogers Cable ---> HTPC
moriconim 2008-02-19, 07:58 PM with the fire wire... are you recording live or is it for transfering recorded media... also is the media available in 1080i or is it downsampled... and are the 5c encryptions still in effect or do you have access to all the HD?
que3jxp 2008-02-20, 06:48 AM with the fire wire... are you recording live or is it for transfering recorded media...
Live/PVRing via SageTV.
also is the media available in 1080i or is it downsampled...
It is the raw data stream that is sent from Rogers so it is whatever the originating station uses. ABC HD, for instance, is almost always 720p. Most of the other stations are 1080i.
and are the 5c encryptions still in effect or do you have access to all the HD?
At the moment (And ever since the firewire ports went live 3 years ago), all of the channels in NB are set to 5C=0 which is equivalent to full access.
And remember, 5C is not encryption. It is a copy allowance/prevention flag.
moriconim 2008-02-20, 08:20 AM ok last question... maybe..haha... do you need a rogers HDPVR unit to do this... or can you use a regular rogers HD box?
que3jxp 2008-02-20, 01:33 PM It should work with both the HDPVR and the HD box.
Just remember. If you are in Ontario or with Shaw, you may not have much success. In Ontario, it is due to Rogers only recently turning on Firewire with a recent (But OLD firmware update). With Shaw, it is due to increased reports that they are messing about with the 5C settings.
The only part of the country with 100% confirmation of success is New Brunswick on Rogers.
Of course this all becomes a moot point whenever Hauppauge gets their sweet HD "analog hole" device out the door.
moriconim 2008-02-21, 08:26 AM I was browsing and found this.... http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/
do you think that this will work?... or is the encryption still going to exsist?
jvincent 2008-02-21, 09:30 AM That's the one I was thinking of but I haven't really followed it that closely.
que3jxp 2008-02-21, 12:10 PM do you think that this will work?... or is the encryption still going to exsist?
On the HDMI ports yes. This will be encrypted by HDCP.
If the component connections also keeps audio in sync, then there is a possibility. The issue here is whether or not the HTPC software can use that card.
kvehh 2008-04-04, 12:54 AM Hi all, im new to here. and i got few questions
first, recently i bought a TV tuner for my laptop. i was thinking to watch tv on my laptop. somehow it doesn't work. can someone help me please
i got a basic rogers digital box. my tv tuner is a KWorld PlusTV 340U HD ATSC TV USB Stick
i connected the cable from the box to the tuner then to my laptop, somehow i cannot see any channels or any signals
but if i connected direct from the wall cable, to the tuner then to my laptop. i can see a lot of channels but they ar locked also, a really strong signal.
can someone help me plz or explain what is going on? im a noob when it come to tv tuner tv stuff...thanks
kvehh 2008-04-04, 01:04 AM Is rogers support ATSC and QAM yet? if so, what or how do i get it? i really want o get my tv tuner working...i know fully digital signal wont be out until next year feb of 2009...thanks for helping answering.
stampeder 2008-04-04, 02:40 AM Rogers uses encrypted 256-bit QAM already. The QAM tuner in HDTVs is not capable of decrypting Rogers digital TV signals. You need to subscribe to a Rogers digital package with one of their receivers to get the digital channels.
Rogers offers you plenty of specialty channels that are not available OTA, but OTA offers you unparalleled picture quality and free-of-charge viewing, especially now that Rogers has announced that they'll be compressing their HD signals, which causes loss of quality. Choose the best options that suit your needs.
If you live in an area of Canada that gets digital OTA channels then you can use your TV's ATSC tuner without needing a Rogers subscription (ATSC has noting to do with Rogers Cable). See these links for much more OTA & ATSC information:
but if i connected direct from the wall cable, to the tuner then to my laptop. i can see a lot of channels but they ar locked also, a really strong signal.
The simple answer is the Rogers Digital Box should be connected to your televison. You can only connect the incoming cable to your laptop (as you did) and receive the Rogers analog channels.
For the long answer, review the forum to learn about hooking digital cable boxes to computers
kvehh 2008-04-04, 09:16 AM hi, so i just want a conclusion
my tv tuner i got doesnt work with what i have right now with rogers correct?
if i want to get it work, i need to get a HD box correct?
Like what Stampeder said: rogers encrypted 256-bit QAM already
what about unencrypted? when is that going to be? so if i want unencrypted i need to get the HD box correct?
by the way, i live in Toronto Canada. cannot find any OTA channels....
Thanks
if i want to get it work, i need to get a HD box correct?
No. you said yourself your tuner is working fine and getting Rogers analog stations.
You can't plug any Rogers cable box into your laptop, it doesn't work that way. For why, you need to search some threads here to learn more.
kvehh 2008-04-04, 09:42 AM not excetly, let me say again
it can get the signals right direct from the wall cable, which i can see all those LOCKED channels (what are those locked channels? HD??) and can listen to all those radio channels <=(are those digital channels?)
plug from the rogers box to tuner, got nothing no signals no radio
just want to know where is the problem
the tuner or rogers or the setup i got from rogers...
here is the tuner info
Supports Digital Free-to-Air Vestigial TV, ATSC HDTV, and Unencrypted QAM Cable TV
Supports Up To 1920 x 1080i (HDTV) Video Output and Dolby Digital AC3 Audio Output
Supports Burn to Disk Function
Bundled with ArcSoft TotalMedia Software
1. The tuner supports unencrypted QAM, however, very few if any channels on Rogers (other than the music channels) are unencrypted. See the following thread:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=32271
2. If the laptop has a composite, S-video or RF-coax input, then with the STB upstream of the laptop you can see the signal from the STB. The only signal you would see is the channel that the STB is tuned to (ie, you cannot tune the channel using the laptop tuner), however, the laptop tuner would need to be tuned to channel 3 if using the RF-coax input, since that's the channel that the STB outputs its signal on, just like VCRs do. See the following thread on connections:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=76077 Your laptop would function like a VCR/DVD recorder downstream of the STB, however, when using an RF-coax connection, the picture quality would not be that great and you'd only be receiving mono sound.
3. By plugging the cable directly from the wall into the laptop, bypassing the STB, you are usually able to tune to any analogue channels that you subscribe to - the channels from 1-72 typically using the NTSC tuner.
kvehh 2008-04-04, 10:27 AM so, i cannot use this tv tuner yet? since none or not much are avalible. Let say in the future, when HD get more popular then i can use this tuner right?
You can use the tuner for OTA or NTSC, however, you will likely never be able to use it for QAM with a major cable service provider like Rogers because they encrypt most/all of the channels and will continue to do so.
kvehh 2008-04-04, 10:36 AM what about ATSC HDTV? what do i need to get that working?
also, what i heard digital OTA is not going to be air until next year feb 2009. and ntsc going to replace by digital..
Cyclism 2008-04-04, 10:40 AM ATSC HDTV is OTA (Over-the-Air) HDTV, and to get that working you'll need an antenna, at the least.
Check the OTA sub-forum, here:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=81
kvehh 2008-04-04, 10:47 AM thx for the info Cyclism im still kind a little bit confuse
so if i get a rogers hd box it would not work on my tv tuner even is support ATSC HD?
if i understand correctly wht is atsc hd ar, does it mean in the future atsc will be come from the wall cable
which just like now analog from the wall? Thanks
