: CIA / Cybersurf VoIP Service Review and Discussion
Styvas 2007-09-24, 01:30 AM I am now able to access the VT though my router which is it a little progress but i am unable to make/recieve calls, no dial tone.
You may have problems with dropped calls with that router in front of your VT even once you find a way to connect to your telephony service. That particular router is know to drop UDP connections every 5 minutes. It's caused problems for folks using other VoIP services.
I expect that there may be ports that need to be opened on the router in order for you to connect. But I don't know your service, so I can't advise beyond that. Hopefully someone more technically inclined will post here.
Steve
disconnect 2007-09-24, 07:04 AM Ive actually opened all of the ports that are mentioned, I even currently have the ip for the spa2102 dmz'd, still no luck.
mrg_ott 2007-09-24, 11:17 PM Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and to CIA. I've been trying to figure out the whole reset every hour problem and think I found the reason. There is a status on my spa2102 under the Voice-Info tab called "Next registration in:" and this is set to 3600 sec right after a reset and counts down. I can see the admin/advanced options after doing a factory reset and there I see under Voice-Provisioning a label called "Resync Periodic:" which is set to 3600 by default. Unfortunately, I can't see or change these settings after I run CIA's cfg script since I don't have the admin password. Has anyone had any luck getting this password.
Thanks,
mrg_ott
blabber666 2007-09-25, 09:57 PM Leon22 described a way to get the CIA passwords. Use his steps and then you can configure it yourself.
And just for others info. The default ports needed are 5060-5080 and 20000-20011.
If you have the admin password and you don't want your config to update/reset every hour change the "profile rule" on the "provisioning" tab
->Disconnect - I had to mess with the NAT settings within the VT to get a stable connection. I'm using a 3com, and was using a Netgear. So these routers didn't interfere after I turned on NAT.
Another note...bought the 3com router to have QOS....end result was the same as having no QOS on the netgear. QOS seems to suck on the 3com (might be me :)). But now that I can modify the settings on the VT to run QOS I am hoping that it will prove sufficient.
kanata 2007-09-29, 08:59 PM CIA.com just lower their Home Phone Basic plan to ZERO dollar a month. You'll get:
1. A DID number anywhere in Canada;
2. 3 free features including voice mail and caller ID.
3. Unlimited local incoming&outging;
The catch is they charge $3.95 system access fee. But even $3.95/month is the lowest voip plan you can find in Canada.
CIA claim they support Sipura-2100 only but I do put the number successfully in my Netgear WGR615V VoIP wireless router I bought at $40 from ebay.
Here are the steps how I make it work in Netgear WGR615V VoIP router:
1. Go to http://myaccount.cia.com and login with your CIA id you get in your e-mail;
2. Make sure your CIA phone service status is "Active";
3. Register your Netgear WGR615V MAC address in "register voip terminal" link, wait 2 minutes and the system will create the provision file in CIA server;
4. Open your Internet Explorer window and paste this link:
http://voip.cia.com/provision.php?MAC=123456789012
(replace 123456789012 with the MAC address of your Netgear WGR615V). You'll get the provision XML show up;
5. Find the three lines
<Proxy_1_>voip-mtrl2.cia.com</Proxy_1_>
<User_ID_1_>4167654321</User_ID_1_>
<Password_1_>1234567@cia.com</Password_1_>
6. Go to http://192.168.61.1/set_voip.htm in Netgear WGR615 router, put proxy/username/phonenumber/password you get from step 5. Both username and phone number are "User_ID" in step 5;
7. Save your change and wait 1 minutes, you'll see the green light;
8. Dial 1-800-463-3339 and you'll hear "Wecome to Fedex" :)
If you have high speed internet already, the total investment for one year phone service is $4.3 x 12=$51.6 ($0.3 is GST of Canada) or you pay $4.3/month. If you don't have VoIP adapter, go to ebay to get a Netgear WGR615V for $55 shipping included.
CIA customer support sucks. If you don't know what your're doing, don't bother to use CIA because you're on your own if something goes wrong.
Jamis1979 2007-10-05, 09:30 PM I currently use Azurues to get my downloads. I used to use bit tornado but my friend who is also with CIA told me that shaw or some other top dog made it so I can't download fast using the bit tornado client anymore. Now I've been using Azureus and unfortunately after a while of downloading I can't get online and my downloads go to a lower than 1Kb speed. I have to go down under my computer desk and reset the motorola surfboard modem, the telephone modem, and then the router, and then the internet will work again.
If anyone else had or is having this problem and knows of a fix I'd sure like to know it. Thanks.
grace roman 2007-10-10, 07:34 PM I am unhappy ex-customer VoIP Cybersurf. Now I sue them. I need supporting testimonials with name and address. If anybody would like to help, please post here.

djino 2007-10-18, 04:57 PM If Grace_Roman has gone through 1/2 the BS I went through with this company, I can see why he'd want to sue.

fenton 2007-10-18, 09:55 PM Has anybody used CIA/Cybersurf Internet in Vancouver, BC?
They resell Shaw Internet (5 Mbps) for $19.99. Shaw's bundled price for the same service is $32.95. I own a Shaw modem.
If it is the same Shaw cable, won't the Intenet service quality be the same? CIA can of course mess up the billing.

Sorry - ignore this posting. CIA's website info is wrong - $19.95 is ONLY for the first month. After that, there price is the same as Shaw's.
quadxilla 2007-10-22, 09:52 PM Hi
I wanted to use my existing linksys pap2 adapter with cia . However, until now I haven't been able to make it work.
It would be great if someone can help me use my adapter with cia voip service.
My pap2 is connected to a trendnet router (TEW 432BRP) which itself is connected to a shaw modem.
I've tried entering the username, proxy etc in the configuration menu of pap2 but there seems to be no dialtone.
Some things different for my cia setting are :
voip-van1.cia.com
password is of the format: A1234567@cia.com
I don't know why it is not connecting.
Leon22 2007-10-23, 03:38 PM Don't bother using the CIA ATA... Just get a Linksys wrtp54G-NA wireless router with the built in phone ports off ebay for ~$80.00. I know exactly how to set it up to eliminate noise and make your internet and phone stay connected forever (unless CIA servers go down, which is rare). So if you have CIA or are thinking of getting it, get this router and if enough people need help, I'll post the walkthrough for setting it up for an extremely solid and stable connection. My experience this far is with the ADSL version of CIA, but the same applies for the cable version as well.

I am quite new to CIA Cybersurf myself, but I think what you are doing wrong is this.
1.) Read the instructions on how to set it up.
There you will find it is quite explicitly stated that the sequence is this,
1.) Modem is first,
2.) then your voice adapter and
3.) then the router.
You have it the other way round. Also by doing it the correct way you do not need your computer on for the phoneline to work.
Melaqueman 2007-10-24, 10:41 AM As I stated in the previous message I am quite new to CIA Cybersurf and I wonder if anyone here can help me with a small problem.
My phone service is the Premium service and I have voicemail with it and I am using a Panasonic KX-TG5623 cordless phone set. Does CIA send a tone/signal to let my phones know that there is a voice message waiting? I have everything set up to do that on the Panasonic and it only worked once when I was in a call and the message light came on because another call came in while I was in that call (call waiting).
Can anyone shed some light on this for me, CIA is not replying to my email for assistance.
Thx
Gibber 2007-10-26, 05:58 PM Signed up for CIA home phone and H/S internet last Feb. Everything worked without a glitch for the first 6 months. Lately however the home phone is troublesome . At first there would be pockets or snipets of conversation missing along with static. Lately it seems to go dead almost daily. Technical support on a scale of 1 - 10 is 0 so it's try different things on my own . I moved our Panasonic cordless phone base unit away from appliances and that seemed to stop the missing bits of conversations. As far as the phone going dead on a regular basis I'm at a loss so any info/ suggestions would be appreciated.
The H/S internet works flawlessly ( except for relatively rare network outages)
I had 3 web dial up for 10 yrs and it always worked without a problem so I'm hoping whatever is the cause of the home phone problems will get resolved.
quadxilla 2007-10-26, 09:34 PM thanks for your efforts guys, but I want to use the existing pap2 I have with cia's service (which some people claim to have successfully done, see url at end).
Obviously anyone can go ahead and shell out $80 or so on a new adapter/router, which these companies are happy to promote (and unfortunately they do not want to support a large number of them). But thats just another way to make profit and let users go through the hassle of spending on new routers, adapters, network cards ... every now and then.
Jamis1979 2007-10-30, 02:36 PM 1) I got my bill and found two additional charges of $5.25 for a total of $10.50. I looked at my last few months of credit card statements and found I am being charged those two additional charges each month for the past 3 months. I call CIA. They tell me those charges are for two extra lines. I say, I never asked for two extra lines. They say, it was a glitch in their system and they will reimburse me $10.50. I tell them I want to be reimbursed for the full $31.50 that was charged over the three months of the error. They tell me they are unable to do that for me. They tell me I should have called them when it first occured and it's my fault for not doing that. I was pissed.
2) CIA doesn't work properly up and not working properly the last few months:
a) I will be talking happily with someone on the phone when all of a sudden they won't be able to understand a word I'm saying, they'll say I'm breaking up OR I will hear their voice breaking up to the point I can't understand them. There is no download going on my computer at the time and sometimes my computer is even off.
b) I hear the phone ring, pick it up after 2 or 3 rings max, I will say hello 4 or 5 times before the person actually hears me.
c) People are getting put directly through to my answering maching even when I am home. I hear the phone ring, pick it up after 2 or 3 rings max, I say hello over and over and nobody ever answers. I check my call display to see what number called, I go to call it back and I get the beeping dial tone that tells me I have a message. I check the message and the person who just called left one. I call them back and they say nobody answered the phone.
d) I pick up the phone to call someone, there's a dial tone, I dial the number, then silence. I can't dial out sometimes period.
e) I pick up the phone to call someone, there's a dial tone, I dial the number, I get put through to their answering machine. They call back saying it was weird their phone never even rang.
f) In regards to the internet, anytime I am downloading something for more than 3 or 4 hours, the devices lose their connection and I have to reset them in the proper order. I am reseting those things under my desk almost every time I download something that takes more than an hour or two.
If one of the above lettered things didn't happen to me on a daily basis, I could say it was maybe other peoples phones causing the problems. But it is happening too much to be other people.
quadxilla 2007-10-30, 07:22 PM OMG Jamis , you've got a ton of problems there. (My sympathies with you). If I were you I'd leave the company right after the 1st problem itself.
But now that I've been unsuccessful in all my efforts (and my efforts were really deep, incl. all possibilities) to connect my adapter to their service (with not an iota of technical service being offered) , I am happy to announce that I have left cia (yes without even getting a chance to try their service ).
and here's the icing on the cake: anyone really interested in good voip (plus appreciable tech support ) must try netfone.ca . I would not delve further in my recommendations because I just got my connection working a couple of hours ago but I believe they are atleast better than cia and many others. Also, their prices are quite competitive - $10 for a local line with unlimited outgoing and incoming.
Though they also do not officially support pap2 adapters but their tech support were helpful in letting me set up my pap2 via chat.
Well thats it for now, will let you know if I run into any more problems etc.
