: CIA / Cybersurf VoIP Service Review and Discussion
djino 2007-01-18, 07:07 AM Dial *98 .. it will ask you for the default password (which I believe is your phone number with area code.. but I'm not positive on that).
Yes, all calling features are free with CIA (just goto myaccount.cia.com to activate them)

Gouie 2007-01-19, 10:35 AM Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone has heard of cia.com. They are an VOIP provider offering phone and internet service for a VERY low monthly price.
Almost seams like a too good to be true thing.
Workingpeople 2007-01-19, 12:25 PM Thank you, djino! I tried and it really worked. the password is my local number with the area code.
I have another question and hope to get an answer. I need the SMTP server address to set up my email program. Without it, I cannot use my current email program to send mails. Can anyone help me with this?
djino 2007-01-19, 12:53 PM I am at work right now, but I will check when I get home.

The default address for incoming mail is mail.3web.com and the outcoming mail is simply smtp.3web.com.
Hope this helps.

ngrover 2007-01-19, 01:19 PM Has anyone tried to use the CIA service with different voice terminal like the PAP2 has it worked?
Can anyone confirm that a Linksys PAP2 works with the settings provided by CIA Sable? I have an unlocked PAP2 that I want to use.
I was just hit by 3 extra bills from CIA for going over bandwidth limitation. The bills are for months sep-oct-nov. It was supposed to be unlimited !! ?? (I can't check my bandwith because that web page does not work, but I can't have more than 15-20 GIG a month. I have a small HD. It's not like I am using 300 GIG)
They are slapping me with 37$ x 3 plus probably 2 more months (dec-jan). That means 5 x 37$=185$ !!!
Of course I am contesting these charges. Anybody, got the same surprises ?
Stay away from this company.
djino 2007-01-26, 07:33 AM Nope, have not received anything, but I'm not a heavy user. I download maybe max 15-20 Gigs / month.

"you able to get through to CIA to contest charges?"
heybirder 2007-01-26, 08:41 AM One of my co-workers tried CIA here in Ottawa. It started off ok but he had numerous problems including no phone for several weeks and cancelled. He didn't mind so much but his wife and teenagers were staging a coup
Squirreldip 2007-01-26, 10:28 AM I don't think I've ever seen CIA advertise what their bandwidth limits are - can someone post a link.
If I recall correctly they told me it was unlimited back when I signed up. I've been with CIA for almost a year now and 3Web for about a year previous...
djino 2007-01-26, 02:53 PM This is posted in the Terms of Service for CIA regarding Bandwidth caps
"In the case of HSIS, underlying Carriers may impose caps on bandwidth usage and hence such usage capacity is not unlimited in those cases. We and those Carriers are entitled to enforce those bandwidth caps. If you refuse to adhere to the caps, your HSIS may be suspended, restricted or terminated."
But it does not mention any fees that would be imposed if you go over these caps. Nor do they mention what the caps are. So you could perhaps fight those charges.

Squirreldip 2007-01-26, 04:11 PM @2905: Where are you located?
@djino: Thanks for the post. I agree that if they do not specify what the charges will be (or the fact that charging is an option) they cannot charge you.

"you able to get through to CIA to contest charges?"
Only by e-mail, they don't answer the phone. In fact, I think their phones are ALWAYS busy. If you need to, their direct office phone was posted here a few pages back.
suirreldip: Where are you located?
I am in Montreal, hence they use videotron. I have read on another board that someone has also just received 4 bills for overcharge.
'If I recall correctly they told me it was unlimited back when I signed up. I've been with CIA for almost a year now and 3Web for about a year previous...'
The reason I signed up with them was the price and it was unlimited... If it is not, no way I would have signed up.
Long battle ahead I think. I have been exchanging a few e-mails with them...
STAY AWAY!!! I should have listened to my friends and not sign up.
djino 2007-01-27, 03:00 PM :(
And I think Videotron has a download cap of 20 GBs.
djino
"yes, I also remember them advertising Unlimited"

If anybody has a web page of them advertising unlimited (really unlimited), please let me know, I will surely need it, I suspect they might try to make a new page up (saying there is a cap).
Thanks
djino 2007-01-29, 07:40 AM Here's something from 3web HS ( http://www.get3web.com/common/commonMenu.jsp?page=about )
A Paragraph states: "To our customers, this means fast, reliable connections, unlimited Internet access, unlimited Email accounts and much more - all for just $9.95 per month."

ssunp 2007-01-29, 06:54 PM By george it works.....
I never was able to contact CIA by phone ( over 1 month of attempts ).
The issues with the VT crashing and losing internet connections was due to QOS issues. This can be fixed by manually throttling your upload/download connection limits.
An e-mail angel named Donna guided me through the mire and had my 2nd ip assigned solving my issues.
A big thank you to Squirreldip for the aid.
Now that everything is working, I can give this service a fair chance.
I will give it a few months before giving the thumbs up or down. If you are not very computer savy, take the advice of others and wait until the customer service response times are fixed before using this service.
SuperCan 2007-01-30, 01:31 PM Hi ssunp
DO you have SPA2100? How do you change the upload/download rate.
I only have the user/user pw but they have never sent me the system password. Have you try your call blocking? Anyone knows how to activate the permanent Call Blocking feature? Please help...Thanks

In the options section of P2P software you will see setting for inbound, outbound, or max connections. Usually these are set to unlimited. I throttled to 50 and my bugs dissapeared.

mondjef 2007-02-07, 12:20 PM Hi, thinking of switching from rogers to CIA but I have an asterisk box at home that I use for various call routing and other features. Does anyone know the settings to use this service with Asterisk or the settings (without username and password) that are used in the Linksys PAP2...with these I could figure out the settings for Asterisk? Thanks,
