: CIA / Cybersurf VoIP Service Review and Discussion
Jakew 2006-11-23, 04:03 PM I cancelled CIA in early June. Eventually (a few days before I was going away for 5 weeks) they finally provided instructions as to returning rented equipment and said I had 30 days to return it (this wasn't unusual, other than how long it took CIA to provide these instructions).
Fortunately there were no problems, I dropped it off at their Ottawa office, got a (hand-written!) receipt, no problem. ... or so I thought.
The other day I got another "return our equipment in 30 days or else" notice. Greeeeaaat. I really don't want to have to go see them in person, but given how useless all other forms of communication are with them, it looks like I will have to.
SO GLAD I dumped the poor excuse for a service provider.
Hey Dunro... I'm trying to find out where to return my modems as well. What address did they give you?

"just look for cybersurf"
blumpy 2006-11-24, 07:12 PM So has anyone been able to get their VT1005s working behind a WRT54GL?
I've been using my VT1005s on a 2nd IP address CIA assigned me but it is still constantly crashing, it is randomly crashing every 2 to 48 hours.... I've just been so fed up I'm not even using the phone service.
I have a feeling if I can get it working behind the router it may solve the problems, but I haven't been able to do it. I've tried various versions of DD-WRT, stock firmware, port trigger, port forwarding... all without any luck.
I've given cia pretty good run, but I mean 6 months now and I still can't get a working phone line... it's a joke. Thank god I never relied on their provided phone line for anything.
if I can't get this to work, I'm going leave cia.
Anyone?
coached1976 2006-11-25, 08:32 PM When I moved to a new apartment, I wanted to try and save some money. So I cancelled my sympatico and Bell lan line and signed up with CIA.
Problems started right away. Things never happened when they (CIA) said they would. THe installation guy showed up several days late. The voip box showed up several weeks late (back ordered). The UPS never showed up.
The internet and voip worked fine, when it was up and running. Until a few days ago (Wednesday, Nov 22). Nothing worked. My model had all the lights on as if it were working but my Network settings from Windows kept saying no connection.
I tried endlessly to connect, removeing my voip and routers to see if I could get a direct connection. Nothing, for 3 days)
I tried calling technical support.... wow... what a joke. Spent 1.5 hours on hold on friday, from my cell phone, cause the lan line is down (fun stuff).
Got to fed up with waiting and using my minutes.
Saturday morning I got up and called, started out at #2 in the cue. 30 minutes later I finally got someone. She asked my what the problem was... and then very quickly said "I'll have to pass you to the VOIP guys... (click)". No chance to talk. From there I spent the next 2 HOURS in position 1 of the cue and never got anyone.
So I left, went to the Rideau Center and signed up with sympatico.
I work on bank street and will be bringing my voip and modem in on monday and cancelling.
This company is really bad. They have an unsatisfactory record with the BBB (http://data.ottawa.bbb.org/commonreport.html?bid=13139)
I would avoid this company at all costs.
vipros 2006-11-27, 01:05 AM There was a network switch over last week; there was a outrage of 3 days, as far as I was told.

As a follow up, even before the 30 days on this email passed, I found two $114 charges from 3Web (aka CIA) on my credit card. And of course, their 1-877 number is down. I will of course have to pull $228 out of nowhere to pay off my credit card while I fight this charge.
Not regretting my decision to dump these morons one bit.

Squirreldip 2006-11-29, 01:41 PM I have to say that I haven't had any issues over the last 4 months (+/-) - telephone's been working fine and billing is correct.
However...
I host my own email - I got tired of having to change my email every time I changed providers so I picked up my own domain and use everydns.net to handle the dynamic IP.
The only problem is that certain domains will not accept mail from Shaw's IP's and for these domains I relay my mail through CIA's mail server. The problem I'm having is that the dns entries for their mail servers seem to be changing constantly. Which do I use:
smtp.cia.com (209.197.145.55)
mail.cia.com (209.197.145.189)
smtp.3web.com (209.197.145.189)
mail.3web.com (209.197.145.185)
IP's are as of today. Pings to 3web redirect to cia but as you can see IP's are different.
It seems that once I pick a working one it craps out in a couple of days and I've got to pick another. It works for a couple of days then craps out again.
Any ideas?

Why don't you use google's smtp server ? google allows different sender name.
Squirreldip 2006-11-30, 04:17 PM Why don't you use google's smtp server ? google allows different sender name.
Thanks gor the suggeestion...
I tried but google (gmail) changes the sender from my home account to my gmail account.
I'll try using cia's smtp IP address rather than the domain name...

I'm pretty sure that Gmail allows you to add an account that is then marked on outgoing messages as the From and Reply-to addresses.

IP's didn't help...
Thanks for the note - I found the Add Account... Only problem is that I'll have to add an account for each address in my domain. It aslo sends my gmail account and says "on behalf of" - don't know if I like this but may have to live with it...
Styvas 2006-12-02, 03:13 AM I see. I haven't actually tried it.

Squirreldip 2006-12-04, 05:29 PM Funny - I disabled my redirection and the mail was/is getting through. Guess my problem domains aren't a problem any more...
IMUP4IT 2006-12-05, 02:33 PM Cybersurf service offering is incredible. Having all the call features, local calling, high speed internet, plus a competitive long distance plan (not mention, the first $100 free) is fantastic. Finally I've been able to ditch Telus and Rogers, which was costing me over double for the same service, once and for all.
I agree they may be thin on support but not too much of a surprise for a small company. I've had to deal with their help desk twice now, once a billing issue and once a technical troubleshoot, and both times my questions are answered timely and with a satisfactory resolution.
Now that their revenue is growing, I foresee a growing focus on customer service.
I highly reccomend this company.
djino 2006-12-05, 02:55 PM You sound like you work for the company.
Can you explain why I have not been able to speak to a CSR in the past 4 months. Always busy signal. (My issues are minor, but it does not leave me a good feeling to know if something major should happen with the service, I will not be able to speak with a CSR).

"You must be a CIA Employee.. yup"
Squirreldip 2006-12-05, 03:51 PM I agree with the intent of his message but "highly recommend" - I don't think so... CIA is definitely not for the faint of heart.
And add to your busy signal comment: Has anyone ever had a reply to an email?
Styvas 2006-12-05, 07:23 PM I highly reccomend this company.
There is no indication that IMUP4IT does work for CIA, but I want to take this opportunity to remind all users that spam from employees of any service provider will not be tolerated.
Thanks,
Steve

I would look at the positive side "I foresee a growing focus on customer service." if this person does come from CIA.
