So, I'm pretty sure that I'm just screwed, but I have 1 year remaining on my contract and will be moving to the US. I'm guessing there is no way for me to get out of my contract, which sucks because the termination fee will be about $440.
Any ideas? I can easily prove that I'm moving there, and that I have no intention of ever returning to Canada.
You can transfer the contract to someone else by giving them some cash.
Say your contract is $40 a month you might be able to transfer the contract to someone by paying them $200 and they take over the contract. It costs you some money but its less than the termination fee.

Right, that option is always on the table, but there's little hope outside of that? My friend, who moved back to Canada after college had no trouble convincing Verizon that they should terminate his contract for free when he told them he had no plans of returning to the US within the next 5 years.
Sigh, I guess I'll look to sell the contract to someone. Any recommended places to look for potential buyers?
Have you explored your options with Telus?

You can try www.cellclients.com

Another possibility is http://ca.cellswapper.com/
But I recall, as Hugh hints, that Telus and others do/did offer an opportunity to exit a contract early upon proof of relocation outside their service area for work or school. Definitely check with Telus before giving up.

Thanks guys, I hadn't talked to Telus yet simply because I'm not definite on my dates. I had done a little bit of research, read through the online contract, and couldn't find anything that seemed positive - so I was braced for the worst.
I will definitely give them a call once my dates are confirmed and I'll let you know how it goes.
