They say to use a 3"x20" mounting board, with just over 2" Feedline Separation.
Coat Hangers are cut down to 8", so (after bend loss) are 7.5" to 7.75" whiskers.
Bowtie Spacings = 5.75" and Tine Spacing = 3".
Nearly identical (earlier?) Make:TV pdf file I found via Google search is here:
http://current.org/ptv/ptv0821make.pdf
Most popular UTube "Coat Hanger HDTV Antenna" (500K+ views!!!) is babblin5:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw
He says to use a 2.5"x20" mounting board, with a smaller 1.5" Feedline Separation.
Coat Hangers start out as 14", so (after bend loss) are shorter 6.75" whiskers.
Uses same 5.75" Bowtie Spacings and 3" Tine Spacing as above.
So there is a range of dimensions being used for the UTube TV Antenna,
as I tried to cover in the posted 4nec2 sim runs.

Thanks for the links, holl_ands. Like I said, I only caught bits and pieces of it before.
The following design was invented in the 1960s by an engineer named Doyt Hoverman.
Its astounding how the guy from Make could get so many things wrong in just one sentence ! ROTFL LMAO.
First off, his following design is a common bowtie of course, heh.
Second, his first patent on it was in the 1950's, not the 1960's.
Third, AFAIK, he wasnt an engineer per se, but rather owned a TV sales and service shop in Lima, Ohio.
http://www.televisionbroadcast.com/article/68820
He was brillant man who used a lot of common sense. If he was around now, Im sure he would be modeling it also. (geez, its kind of weird when I google his name, I get a quote from me)
Yeah, his Make antenna will work. Ive built many bowties in the past 30 or so years in my on again off again antenna experimentation of various configurations, and they all worked per se, just some work better than others. You can see a picture of the one I built around 1994 (originally an 8 bay) in the AVS thread sometime around last June. I havent wasted my time modeling it, but I bet it works better than the Make antenna, heh. Especially a lot better now since Ive put an unused large window screen behind it. It originally was an 8 bay, but as mclapp will tell you, its not easy getting an 8 bay to work better than a 4 bay, and it didnt as an 8 bay.
I think my brother still has a subscription to Make magazine (he dumps some of the old issues on me, heh) He'll get a kick out of this, heh. Its amazing how much less real research "professional" journalists do now with the advent of search engines.
Janitor Tzap 2009-03-04, 04:13 PM Here is a design of the front driven elements that I thought up.
http://thehaisho.com/artgallery/albums/userpics/10114/HFT3-ANT.bmp
I haven't tried it yet, or have I even modeled it first.
Is this a plausible design?
Or just a pipe dream of mine. ;)

300ohm 2009-03-04, 06:11 PM Go ahead and model or make it, it looks like it would be an interesting piece of sculpture. My guess is it would behave like the GH with wide elements, similiar to my folding GH model posted earlier in this forum.
ericball 2009-03-06, 09:01 AM Modelling is your first step. (Can you imagine the old days when you had to actually build each idea and take it out to the range?) However, I suspect it will not perform very well. The GH works because acts like a combined antenna and phased feedline. In your design the signal in the outer elements has to flow away from the feedpoint, against the phase of the signal. (Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong. And these days you don't need a Cray to model an antenna.)
300ohm 2009-03-06, 11:36 AM And these days you don't need a Cray to model an antenna.)
Heh, the way I figure it, just based on MIPS alone, I have about 200X the power of the CRAY 1, the system NEC2 was originally designed to run on. And I only have a cheapie system I threw together.
Janitor Tzap 2009-03-06, 04:30 PM I think I should state that the front elements are really just large loops.
{And I'm having trouble making those loops}
The idea was to decease the physical size of the antenna.
Yet, try to keep the sensitivity, and gain about the same as the original Single Bay Gray-Hoverman.
Thus, the antenna could be used in an apartment, or where outside antenna's, and dishes are banned.
Yeah, I maybe asking for the impossible.

Youre going to have a seriously real problem with the modeling software ( or even loading it ) until you correct that problem. The program doesnt tolerate any tiny errors. The free modeling program is here : http://home.ict.nl/~arivoors/

300ohm 2009-03-11, 08:40 AM Yes, on that same website where you downloaded the program, there are pdf files to download and read (NEC beginners guide (nec_partX.pdf) in English, German and French. Read that first. Then there is a _Get_Started.txt file in your 4nec2 program folder with a step by step tutorial.
ceeaton 2009-03-13, 09:52 PM That set of nec2manual?.pdf manuals looks an awful like a Physics 300 level course I took at Dickinson....I think I'm too old to think that much (or relearn what I've forgotten over the years of beer abuse). But if that is the way to learn how to "do" this program, guess I better get started...
300ohm 2009-03-13, 10:51 PM set of nec2manual?.pdf manuals looks an awful like a Physics 300 level course
Hmm, it sounds like youre looking at the full NEC2 manuals with all the backup equations and detailed 80 column card instructions. You want to read the "A Beginners Guide to Modeling with NEC by L.B. Cebik" four part pdf series first. Then do the examples in the "_GetStarted.txt" file found in your C:\4nec2 folder. Also, by clicking on Help in the 4nec2 program you can get alot of valuable info by topic. Only then, when you want detailed backup info, go to the full manual.

4nec2 will open many but not all *.ez files, such as fol. Ken Nist *.ez files:
http://www.hdtvprimer.com/SIMS/
In particular, 4nec2 would NOT open cm4221a.ez, db2a.ez or wg1713a.ez.
For those files, EZNEC would be required: http://www.eznec.com/
300ohm 2009-03-14, 03:40 AM In particular, 4nec2 would NOT open cm4221a.ez, db2a.ez or wg1713a.ez.
Wait a minute, I could open all those files with 4nec2, heh. Sometimes you have to open the .ez files by right clicking on them in Windows Explorer, and then choosing to open them with the 4nec2Visualizer (one of the options Windows gives you). 4nec2 will then convert them. And then you should adjust the EX card so it has more than 1 segment, as per the 4nec2 modeling guidelines.
holl_ands 2009-03-14, 04:00 AM With 4nec2 ver 5.7.0.5 I get "Not a Valid EZNEC file" trying to open w1713a.ez per above method....
300ohm 2009-03-14, 08:01 AM Do you mean version 5.7.5 ? Thats what Im using, the very latest version, dated February 2009. I think he had a 5.7.5 earlier, like in December or January, and then may have fixed something. Try re-downloading and installing.
Ill try re-downloading those above Ken Nists files (I downloaded the ones I got like in July) and see if theres been changes that may affect you.
Edit: Yep, still works like a charm doing it the way I posted above. I did have to increase the number of LD cards in the 4nec2 settings to 1024 because of the conversion message.
I believe Ive posted the NEC file for the other two, so heres the DB2a NEC file :
CM DB2 : AntennasDirect DB-2, converted with 4nec2 on 14-Mar-09 8:12

Hmm, didnt convert with an EN or RP card. Maybe some windows settings are giving you problems ?
holl_ands 2009-03-14, 05:09 PM I'm using same version. Ver 5.7.0.5 is what exe PROPERTIES will display.
I don't think it's windows. Of the 12 Nist *.ez files I tried to convert, 9 worked just fine.
Above DB-2 file runs just fine. Thanx...
300ohm 2009-03-14, 05:47 PM I dont know what to say, it works fine for me, heh. A corrupted download can also cause problems. I just right click on the file at Ken Nist site and "save target as".
