I tried three of my 'reference' SD DVD's; 'Attack Of The Clones', 'Heart - Alive In Seattle' and 'The Mummy', and yes, upscaling seems to be improved a fair bit after the update to 2.20.

The resume feature is very cool. I no longer have to remember exactly where I was in a movie when having to stop early.

Where are you finding the settings for mosquito noise?
I popped in the 2nd season of Alias and didn't notice a difference in the upscaling...maybe I'll try a few more discs.
The resume feature is indeed much appreciated.

Press triangle while watching a DVD. It's one of the video options.

Just updated the machine. No problems. Sony needs to find friendier ways to update this damn thing.

I can start the update using the remote but I need to find the controller to finish it, though both pieces of hardware have the same buttons.

Changed thread title to keep it current.

Seems the new firmware (v2.20) may have messed up some types of streaming media. Only one of my MP4s won't play now and an HD-XviD failed to play after leaving it paused for a couple of minutes but it played fine after restarting.

Did The PS3 2.2 Firmware Update Break MP4 Streaming? (http://gizmodo.com/373749/did-the-ps3-22-firmware-update-break-mp4-streaming)

I haven't noticed any problems with playback.
But, the fast forward/reverse seems to be lagging.

Firmware 2.30 announced. Not sure what's in it, but we'll need it for the new Playstation Store.

This also means no more content until the release.

Update to 2.20 mostly working good for me, but still some stumbles with media playback.
I have created some 1080 DivX files that are AC3 5.1 audio and they play, however something strange is happening.
At some point in playback of a 90 minute file the player will stop playing (usually at about 50%) stating that the content cannot be played and it will display error 80028801.
This seems odd given that I will have watched at least half of the show at the point of failure.
If I restart then select fastforward at 120X and zoom forward to the second half of the show it will continue to play to the end without any problems at all.
The file was created with the latest version of the DivX codec. It plays perfectly on the PC that I used to make the file.
However, having said all that, I have actually had better results using AVC MP4, but that's another story.

Are you playing directly or streaming? I have been having trouble with streaming via TVersity since 2.20. But I copied some files directly to the PS3, and the playback is much better. I think 2.20 screwed something up with TVersity streaming.

Not only TVersity but other streaming apps. Hopefully 2.30 due later this month will fix the issue.

my PS3 always skipped or studdered when playing back HD divx. 1080p, forget about it, too studdery, 720p movies, usually starts studdering around half way through the movie, I have to pause the movie for 3-4 seconds and then play. That helps for a little while. I think sony don't want the ps3 to play HD divx, its promoting bluray rips, which it wants no part of....

The rather large files that I make are burned to Dual Layer DVD's as DATA disks. Then I play them in the PS3 as I would most other disks.
I don't experience any stuttering, the files play well right up until it stops and displays the 80028801 error message.
I have also copied the file onto the PS3 hard disk then played it from there, results are pretty much the same as if played from a ROM disk.
It will play properly to a point then just stop ...
My thinking is that these 1080HD files are working properly but currently there is something that is causing this strange error.
Of note, there is mention of this 80028801 error message on numerous forums, but not all are attributed to the same conditions I have.
I also have the PC connected to the panel using DVI-HDMI with digital coax audio and that works without any probelms at all, but is quite geeky.
Not very accomodating for those that lack an understanding hence my efforts to get things working on the PS3.
As others have noted, perhaps the soon-to-be upgrade to 2.30 will help.
