If the mighty mouse bothers you that much, just go out and buy any three button mouse, problem solved.

How long is the wait from wake-up until your wireless makes a connection?

One other question, how did you rename the .jpg file, was it done in iPhoto or did you use the os to rename the file?

Camerongmitchel:

Thanks for the questions. Well, despite what I said in my last post, I finally gave up using sleep mode because after sleep it does not pick up the wireless Internet signal anymore. Every time I wake up from sleep it goes hunting and never stops now. I have to manually set it, requiring username and password.

As for the mouse, I bought myself the Logitech S530 Laser Wireless keyboard and mouse to solve my problems with the Mighty Mouse. The S530 is now considered an old model, but based on reviews it was supposed to be good and it was on sale. I used it and it was indeed very good. It was very responsive and there were ample single-press buttons for convenience. The mouse of course worked great. So, I thought I solved the problem (at least with the mouse). However, after about a month of its use the iMac showed a completely new problem. It froze on bootup. That is there was only a white screen and nothing else...and nothing happened even after 5 minutes. I learned that it is called the "White Screen of Death" (as compared to the Blue Screen of Death" for the PC). It happened on 3 different occasions and I am somewhat mixed up as to how I finally managed to get it to boot. I think the first time I looked up the Internet (on my PC) and came up with the procedure to push 4 keys (alt-apple-p-r?) after pressing the power button for 5 seconds or so (my memory is escaping me on this because I tried different things then). Anyhow, the second time it happened on a different day, the procedure did not work. I had to unplug the main power and wait for 10 minutes before being able to start it (not sure whether I had to hold it for 5 seconds or not now). The third time it happened I had to unplug all USB connected items, including the S530 keyboard and mouse setup (to use the original keyboard and Mighty Mouse) and somehow got it booted again. In short, I am now back to the old keyboard and Might Mouse but will try putting back the S530 keyboard and mouse again some time later. I do not know of other people having a problem with this keyboard. Anyhow, the White Screen of Death was something new to me and no one seems to have a single magic solution--it is try this or maybe that and it might work headache.

As for the question about how I renamed the photo that simply went missing/corrupt, I renamed it within iPhoto.

I still love the iMac because the display is simply fantastic and, when it works, iPhoto and iMovie are great. Importantly, with the iMac there is no need to worry about viruses. However, as someone said it is just another computer (i.e., it has it own hassles--lately, it takes literally forever to download updates, such as from Perian).

Have you contacted Apple (while you were under warranty) about your problems? They'd probably recommend that you reinstall your OS with the latest patch level, which may or may not help. Do you have all OS and hardware specific updates installed?

It sure sounds like you might have hardware problems, though...

yeah def something wrong, Ive had mine since may, never crashed yet,
leave it in sleep mode all the time, only time turned off is if I am away for a couple of days, I install every update they send me also and never had a problem with the WiFi. I use a Microsoft bluetooth mouse and it works fine.
But now and then I do wish the system was a bit easier to use,
I liked Picassa but it doesnt work on Mac, or same as Quickbooks (not any real good accounting software for mac that I like so I still use XP & Vista for that. and of couse some email attachments just wont open on a Mac (mine anyways) (I have never tried Bootcamp on my Mac yet, dont know if i would get virusus or spyware that way or not, just havnt bothered because I still have my PC Laptops for the other stuff) But yeah it does get some getting used to thats for sure, but all in all I like it

I know there were reported issues with the iMac sleeping but I was under the assumption that these went away because it's been a year or more since I last heard of them.

If you need to run Windows, look into VMware Fusion (http://vmware.com/products/fusion/) for running Windows virtually within OS X. Works great!

If you are getting a blank white screen and having trouble booting into leopard you are having far to many issues with your system for there not to be something wrong, one quick search and I found this link http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/TH408LL/A?rp=0&rs=lowestRated
that would certainly scare me off from buying that mouse and keyboard set. If you read the second last post to the bottom it relates directly to a sleep issue and freezing the system. Another look on the Logitech site and you will find this http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7319&p_created=1193779006&p_sid=e9YyRnkj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=8508&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ 9NTMsNTMmcF9wcm9kcz0wJnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9wYWdlPTE mcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1Mb2dpdGVjaCBTNTMw&p_li=&p_topview=1

If your system is working fine with the original keyboard and mouse, then I would think that the problems you are having are definitely related to the Logitech S530. This would be Logitech issue, not an Apple issue.

All of that aside, I would think the wireless network issue is driving you crazy, I would definitely contact Apple before your 1 year is up, have them help you trouble shoot the issue.

Good luck

I have been a PC user for about 17 years and I FINALLY got the balls to try out a mac. I purchased my IMAC from the apple store here in Calgary and I am absolutely loving it! Everyone has their own tolerance when it comes to PC, mine was after 17 years. I find that with my MAC I don't have to "tweak" or mess around with it just to get it working properly, the way it SHOULD run. I have no problems running apps, no more blue screens, i never get error messages, freezing, and it never slows down because of viruses and spam. i dont get any of it. running it now for a while and no problems. it's true that windows does have more functions when right clicking on a file, but i can deal without it. I'm in love with this mac and will NEVER go back to PC. to much BS for me, and i'm sure there are many many many other people which look at the PC the way I do. burn baby burn!

Camerongmitchel,

I think I've solved the flaky wireless issue. I believe two things helped solve it:

(1) I switched from WEP to WPA2, by changing the wireless router encryption setting. I did that through my PC but only after updating from XP Service Pack 2 to SP3; because the latter provides the WPA2 setting but not SP2. { Help for changing to WPA2 can be found at http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9002706 }

(2) I downloaded the free iStumbler software (available from the Apple download site) to find out what other wireless networks are in the neighbourhood. It provides information about the names of the networks and, importantly, the signal, noise and Channels that are being used by the different networks. I found out that mine was on the same channel as a strong signal from a neighbour. As well, my next-door neighbour had a stronger signal than mine (this changed when I switched to WPA2). Anyhow, I switched from channel 11 to 6 and mine does not "conflict/interfere" with any of the 5 other networks that are in my neighbourhood (others are using 1,2,3,11).

On a completely different topic, how do you get rid of a process that starts up every time that I boot up. It was my fault because I tried to install a driver for a printer and then realized that it was not wireless network capable and I just stopped the process. Now, every time I boot up, a message comes up asking me whether I want to configure the Brother printer. How or where can I find the file(s) that I have to delete?

Thanks,
JT

"System Preferences" -> "Accounts", click on your user, and then "Login Items"

EmmEff,
That was a superfast reply...I had hardly finished pressing 'Return' with my question!
Anyhow, I cannot find the relevant "startup" program...only found iTunesHelper, Logic Control Center, and iStumbler in the "Login Events".
Any other possible places?
Thanks!
JT

Is there an icon for this application in your Dock? If so, right-click on it and uncheck "Open at Login".

I got an iMac maybe 5 months ago.. I love it but it's been in for a new power supply twice already.. more like 3 times but the first time they just gave it back because it worked when they checked.. It started randomly turning off and then died each time.. wouldn't turn on again.. I bought an expensive iMac to be productive, and ended up going a couple weeks at a time with no computer, no work getting done.. ouch! I've owned a few computers over the years and never had to bring them in for service, and those were standard PC's.. now the expensive iMac is the one I have to get serviced!! I do love it otherwise.. but just sharing my story.

I agree, that shouldn't be happening but for me, if that's the cost of using a Mac, then so be it. Hopefully they've finally resolved the problem for you.

Wharf, where did you buy it...I know at futureshop with their extended warranty, if they cannot fix it or it is returned for the same problem 3 times...They will replace it.
